Definitely not in kindergarten here. We were told if they can't do it, don't put them in it. He wore velcro sneakers and a lot of elastic waist pants last year. There were some snaps he just couldn't snap. DS is going to be 6 in October. He has the first part of shoe tying down but gets frustrated with the loops. We've tried everything.
AW ahead...I learned when I was 3. I had a friend in daycare who would tie my shoes for me. One day she was taking too long so I did it myself. I apparently picked it up from watching her.

My daughter learned somewhere around the end of Kindergarten. I haven't even attempted to teach my son yet (he's in first grade). I just buy velcro shoes.
My daughter's teacher in Kindergarten had the kids ask a friend who already knew how to tie for help tying their shoes. I actually thought it was a great idea. My daughter wanted to learn so she could be one of the helpers.

My second grader can't - she just got her first tie pair of tennis shoes over the summer so I guess we should work on that. I'm counting in Nordstrom to help me through this.

5 years 4 months. She went from completely having no clue with a side of motor skills delays to perfect tying and double knotting with 100% accuracy within one month of starting Kindergarten. And with us, she was so used to doing hand activities to build motor skills, she wanted no part of our instruction on the matter. It was always tears and "I want to wear other shoes".
The K aid told us she has most kids tying shoes by Christmas. Well sir. That lady, Miss Lindsay, is getting a hefty gift card and our undying appreciation for this. We didn't even really double check or practice with C at home. We thought we'd let the aid work with her for a few months and check in. C came home with a silly version of tying two loops together two weeks ago - fine, we applauded it and didn't press the issue. She came home Friday and tied all the shoes in the house. Proper technique with the one loop, the thread around, the whole bit. Then double tied the loops.
Wa fucking la
I strongly suggest you find a shoe-tie Kindergarten aid guru. But seriously, I will ask Miss Lindsay her teaching technique if you want me to. Part of me is curious, the other part wants to let it remain a mystery (like the contents of hot dogs).
Please teach them. It's such a basic life skill. 7 year olds (within reason) should be able to their own shoes.
He can fasten the shoes that he has, that he picked out. When he picks out shoes with laces, we'll make sure he knows how to fasten those too. Lordy.
The pilgrims travelled to and settled on a foreign continent without laces on their shoes. I would argue they had basic life skills, despite the buckles.
My dd turned 5 in May and she still doesn't know. We watched Youtube videos for a while one day and practiced, but she wasn't getting it. I may look into that Melissa and Doug shoe.
