Boueys are set and everything. From the picture she posted, it looks 100% ready to go, people in wetsuits, just awful.
I just can't even imagine feeling the way I felt with my wetsuit on, after having done everything it takes to get to that start line (& your family, too), to have it cancelled like that. I would have so much trouble getting over that one .
Cancelled due to air quality. I don't see much of a future for this event.
Yeah It has potential to be such an incredible race. I love Tahoe, and my H was so excited when IM came there, hoping we could get a family vacation out of that one. Don't think I'm ready for that risk.

I know that in the grand scheme of things there are much worse things that could happen, but I would be completely devastated. There was talk about canceling leadville marathon due to fire the year we ran that, I would have been so disappointed. And that isn't an IM!

My husband and I were talking about this yesterday. Our friend did it last year and had ice on his bike after getting out of the lake. It just seems like between snow and fire season, it's a hard place to make it work
They raced IM Canada (in Penticton) through heavy smoke from fires in 2005 (I think). The athletes convinced the race officials to hold the event. A lot of athletes had a very difficult time, so I'm not surprised they cancelled today's event. It stinks even more that it was on race morning, but I can understand why they waited to make the call.
Yeah, it's out of their control. I understand, but would still be so upset.
Does anyone know if you can leave a yelp review for Mother Nature?
This is so depressing. They caught the guy that started the fire and he's being held on 10 million dollars bail. I can't even believe the devastation this idiot has caused

Oh my God have I been living under a rock? I had no idea this was not a natural fire.
I hope those people get their money back and not an entry to next year's Tahoe race.
That's much easier said then done, no? I know an IM is MUCH more of a financial investment than a marathon (so maybe policies are different), but that a risk you run, right? Of course you never think it's a risk that would actually happen, but this is in no way within the races control, and a ton of that money has already been spent. It just sucks for everyone.

IM has enough money to give back the money to their athletes. But they probably won't.

Gotcha. I wasn't sure if there is actually a standard for situations like this that is different for IM. It would certainly be a nice gesture! I know the bigger loss here is all of the time spent training, but you guys also spend a small fortune on these events.
I wouldn't expect a refund on the race entry fee, but by the time you show up on race day the entry fee is kind of a drop in the bucket anyway. Travel expenses, gear, nutrition, etc. to get to that point are way more $$$. I know it's a risk you take but... you just don't see it going down like that.

man, this sucks so badly.
The race fee is the one thing there is control over. It's not a drop in the bucket, it's $700. That's a lot of money. I would hope they refund.
Tough call on the $. My guess is that there will not be a refund. While M-dot is a cash cow, their events sell-out with their current policy (though it has recently become a bit more flexible, I blv).
It would be nice, as IM is incredibly expensive ($700+ entry fee, travel, hotel, training itself, gear, merch), but it is an inherent risk in any race.
And, they have all of the equipment there, staffed, aid stations set, permits, medals, swag, etc already paid for. And they will lose $ on merch.

no bright spots
Don't they have insurance? I would think that the company would carry insurance for this type if thing.
