Long toenails are nasty. My Aunt in her later 40's said its a Midwest thing. She keeps her toenails long, it really grosses me out.
No way. I'm in the most middle of the Midwest and it is definitely not a thing.
When we lived on the west coast, where keeping your toenails trim is the norm, a family friend and her friend came to visit from the Midwest. They wanted pedicures and when the lady cut friend of friend's big toenail she flipped out because the lady didn't ask if she wanted them cut and she, of course, wanted them long. I was surprised and mortified at her overly dramatic reaction to it all. It pretty much ruined my pedicure because she wouldn't stop complaining about it the whole time, they both though my nail salon was horrible and refused to tip at the end (I left extra tip).

When my SDs were little they associated french mani with fake nails. I used to do a french mani/pedi and in public SD1 asked me why I got fake toenails and how much it cost. I said very loudly that I did not have fake toenails for anyone in earshot. So embarassed.
ML's resident foot model signing in to say that I leave some white because I'm afraid of getting ingrown toenails if I cut too short. That is not to say that my nails are actually longer than my toes. That would be nasty.
