Do you buy fancy bags or shoes?
I think I know what your H does, and is this kind of income at all common or is he just an insane superstar? There are tutors here in HK who are basically celebrities and have their pictures on adds in the subway and it kind of made me think of your H. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong or to delete the job title.
What's the minimum you would be okay with your husband making if it meant working only 9-5/M-F?
Oh god. Just enough for us to pay our bills (and I'm not talking shopping bills, yo), save, and send our kid to school. I miss him a ton. At this point now that we're not on the hook for a downpayment, I'd say we'd live quite happily on 250-300k. And I'd choose that in a heartbeat.
Yes, even if they're unpaid (re: internships). Work ethic is very important to us, as is giving back. So they will work and volunteer. I refuse to raise an entitled asshole.
Can I ask other people questions too? Lawyers making lower incomes - why? Job pressure? Security? Enjoyment? Better hours? I just considered the cost to become a lawyer and then taking a job that is barely covering SL costs. Maybe I am too $$ focused but doesn't make sense for me. Also live on HCOL.
Because I graduated when the legal market was in the toilet (2009) and was lucky to get anything at all. I needed income, period. It was not my choice.
And then since I didn't practice right out of law school I kind of got shoehorned I to the "non-practicing" role since firms would rather hire a new grad whose skills are fresher and is cheaper.
I really really like what I do now and it's worked out well for me aside from the fact that it pays peanuts. But I do get sad when I think that I never really got a chance to be a lawyer.
I'm not a lawyer but I can answer for my H. He also graduated in 2009 (for his LLM, JD in 2008) and there were just no jobs available. It took him over a year to find anything. And when he did find something it was doing a non-JD job working in politics. He later got an attorney position in state government, but the pay was still shit. Nothing about the lower income was something he personally chose or was ok with.
He finally got a firm job which pays a lot more, but he is a 1st year associate despite the fact he's 30 and has been out of law school for over 5 years. He is a little insecure about that, but he still feels so lucky to have this job. He had to bust his ass, network like crazy, and endure years of job dissapointment to get to this point though. It also never would have happened if we didn't move abroad.
You may post about vacations, but does your h job allow for you to go on vacation together? Any exotic places? (I think this is what I'd spend my $$$$ on if time allows:)
Hahaha. It's not finished! Like. At all. We jussssst got a couch. wanderlustfoodie can attest to what a major slacker I've been!
Oh, hiiiii!
MMer here but 212 is totally pulling me in here since I've confessed to her that I have started lurking on this board for impending subject matter reasons. ::hyperventilates into paper bag::
That said, 212 is fabulous, as most of you apparently know already, her apartment is lovely, and there is nothing wrong with taking 6+ months to get a couch, says the person who's lived in her apartment for over 3 months with no range.
ok so we get that you know you are lucky. but truly in your day to day life do you ever get caught up in mo' money mo' problems? like worried your kid's future will be ruined if they don't get into a top private preschool? or feeling low because you don't own a yacht?
I bet I would.
Sometimes, but it's very fleeting. Of course I can look around and see the people who fly private, or who own a townhouse, or are trust fund babies. But you know what? Good for them.
I do worry about my kid. I didn't grow up with this type of wealth, and the kind that he'll be exposed to? I don't even know how to process that shit. That part makes me nervous. .
Is your H's job something he sees himself doing long-term? Is it really sustainable in the long-term with the hours he works? Or are you saving aggressively now so you/he can do something else (less lucrative??) in the future?
What do you splurge on? Make up? Shoes? Drink coasters embellished with flakes of gold?
What are you cheap with? Single ply TP? Clothes?
I've been known to splurge on a good pair of shoes every now and again. But really, I'm a sahm now. What the fuck do I need that shit for? haha. I splurge on wine, nice dinners, and travel. Our only real family time is on vacation, and it's often booked last minute. That costs us.
Cheap? Well, I just gave up and got a housekeeper. Haven't had one since the days of DINKs. My friends all think I'm insane for doing it myself, but I like cleaning. Also super cheap about paying for shipping. FUCK THAT SHIT.
