If your husband asked for something for a gift that you didn't think that he would ever use, would you still get it for him?
James asked for a CHAINSAW for his birthday (Nov)/Christmas. We live in a condo. We don't venture out into the wilderness or anything. He isn't a forrester by trade. I don't know what the heck he thinks he's going to do with it. We don't even have a garage to store it in. We just have a little storage closet thing off our back patio.

It would depend on how expensive the gift was and how practical it would be. For something as expensive as a chainsaw, I wouldn't get it unless I lived out somewhere woodsy. Does he want it to do yard work or DIY house stuff? Maybe something smaller and less extreme would be better?

thank you MrsPotatohead, I feel like a horrible wife, because he like NEVER asks for anything - hates receiving gifts, etc. But this is ridiculous, right?

This thread is cracking me up. "A chainsaw would be good to have." Yeah, if you're a lumberjack or a serial killer. I assume your husband is neither of those things.

definitely ridiculous. I have a list of things for H, some of which he's asked for that are $$. I saved the idea because it's not bad, but there's just no room or $ for it right now. I wouldn't get him a similar power tool though because that would just start an argument IMO - like "I asked for X not all this other stuff similar to X" lol. If he brings it up just say you've stored the idea away for when you have the space/greater need.
I started a google spreadsheet for my family where every time I come across a gift idea I put it in there. That way instead of trying to come up with things near the gift-giving occasion I can peruse my list, which is way more relaxing
I mean are you guys going to buy a house eventually or are you happy in the condo... I mean I could see MAYBE if you guys are going to buy a house and he wants to like chop down all the trees.. but if you guys are staying in your condo, it would be a resounding NO.

I will say, though, Home Depot has 9Amp electric chainsaws for like $50. We got one for trimming an enormous hedge. I don't know how well it would work for cutting firewood, but really where would he be able to go to cut down his own tree??
My H is the king of asking for random crap he doesn't need and probably won't use. My rule of thumb is of we have space to store it I'll humor him, otherwise I tell him sorry but not till we have a house. He always comes back around and realizes he is being ridiculous, he just gets on these random kicks.
