Oh yeah, they also want parent volunteers to decorate their trunks like this.
Because that sounds like approximately the biggest parents one upping each other pissing contest EVERRRRR.
Oh FFS.
Hello. Daycare parents WORK. who the hell has time for that?
Wtf. I just cant.
Eta: what about people who dont drive SUVs and hatchbacks? Lolllll a corolla with its trunk open and candy inside looks like a scene for the next Taken movie.
I don't mind it for a church, since it is also like a church get-together at the same time, and people can socialize, etc.
We will do both this year. DS1 is super excited about wearing his costume, so now he can wear it twice.
Our church does trunk or treat, usually the weekend before Halloween. Some people go all out and decorated their trunks (the kids LOVE it) and some do not. DS1 loves to dress up and run around with all of his friends from church and I love seeing my friends' kids and giving them good candy. It's much more fun than my neighborhood where people often TOT as a family, so there's no one actually answering the door. Most people just leave a bowl on the doorstep. Lame.

Our DC had a Halloween party every year. It's not in place of TOTing though, just a fun extra thing they like to do. It's at night (after the center is closed) so the parents bring the kids. The teachers all dress up & there are activities & games in each classroom. I think it's fun to see all of M's friends dressed up
The church our preschool is at has a trunk-or-treat a few days before Halloween. I was skeptical last year, but it was pretty cute. They had activities and snacks in the hall prior to the "costume parade" and actual trunk-or-treat (while the car people were getting their areas decorated). My little kids really liked it, but I don't think we'd attend after a certain age (like, maybe age 5). We do regular neighborhood ToT on Halloween, too.

I would do the Trunk or treating, but I'd still take my kid regular trick or treating, because the trunk or treating doesn't seem as fun. Plus, double the candy! (Especially since DD is 7 months old, so all the candy goes to me and DH lol)
My BIL's church hosts one of these things every year. They live in a not-so-safe area, but they would never admit that is a reason behind it.
that's precisely why my parents church does Trunk or Treat! the neighbourhood is sketchy at best so having a safe alternative in one location is a better option. they do theirs at night so the parking lot is lit, but not more than a well lit suberban neighbourhood. and there is a parents tent with hot cider and donuts so the parents hang out there and let the kids wander around getting candy. it's also a great alternative for kids whose closest neighbours are miles away. I only got to ToT at 6-7 houses when I was a kid because my mom had to drive me to each house.
idk. I'd roll my eyes at a daycare trunk or treat in mid-afternoon, but I don't think they are a stupid idea across the board.

Around here, it is churches that do the trunk or treating thing, usually in combination with a Fall Festival that leaves out any mention of actual Halloween. Half of the fun of real trick or treating for kids is getting to ring doorbells.
Is this where we can discuss counties that decide what day trick or treating should fall on? I had never heard of that before the interwebs. Trick or treating always has occurred on Halloween for us.
We use ToT as an excuse to actually talk to our neighbours. One of us takes the kid around to meet them and say hi, and then we also get candy. We also enjoy buying great candy to give out. The "danger" of ToT is traffic and visibility, but it's not that hard to be safe on an evening where everyone is expecting kids wandering.

We did neighborhood tot and trunk or treating last year. It was fun. But it was my mothers church so we knew everybody and got to socialize.
I'll be 37 weeks pregnant this Halloween and the trunk or treating will be my own personal savior this year so I don't have to waddle around our neighborhood largely pregnant scaring the childrens with my out of control pregnancy hormones.

I grew up in a neighborhood where the TOT'ing sucked. It was well known that all the kids in our town went to one specific neighborhood to TOT. There's no way I would ever participate in a trunk or treat, mall TOT, whatever. This is the stupidest idea I've ever heard of.

So this is a daycare event? If the kid's PARENTS can't be there to take them around the parking lot are they not allowed to participate?
That's correct. PARENTS must be present. lol
How awful.
I could get on board with this sort of thing - a relatively contained space for TOT - if it meant the kids could just run around freely and collect candy on their own. WTF at parents walking their kids around a daycare parking lot while the poor saps whose parents had to work look longingly out the window.

I would do it and do regular trick or treating on Halloween as well. Hell, my kids ToT at least 5 times in the month of October haha FREE CANDY!!!!!!!! I was really upset that we had a wedding on Halloween this year, but one of the neighboring cities just moved their ToT to Nov 1st because their high school has a big football game on Halloween so now we can ToT then!

So if you you think trick-or-treating isn't safe and live in a place where most people don't own cars with trunks from which to take candy, do the kids have to dig under seats on the subway for candy? Yum!!!!
I think I read my kids' daycare closes early on Halloween. That's just as dumb. Because, guess what? My work doesn't close early. The NYSE isn't like "banking holiday! Everyone go trick or treating!"
Our local school district closes every year on Halloween for "teacher in service day".
Oh yeah, they also want parent volunteers to decorate their trunks like this.

because lets be honest most of the neighborhoods where it is really not safe to trick or treat are also not neighborhoods where people have cars. Like Syria.
