Congrats jordylee! Good luck spunkypenguin! You've trained hard, you're going to rock this!
Where is your finish line? Some random park in Carderock, MD
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Umm...eating my stress away. Last marathon taper I was a nervous, cranky mess. I can't see it being any different this time around.
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? I have a few mantras. "You can only do, what you can do." "Slow and steady wins the race." I usually break these out when I'm tired and wondering why the hell I am running. Who invented this crap?
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. How does tailwind work when you only have two 10oz water bottles for your 17-mile run? When it's not hot, 20 oz of water will usually last me through my whole run. But I can't figure out how to get all my fueling from tailwind.
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? It's a small race so not too much. H and the kids will be there. But I'm thinking that they should position themselves towards the finish line so they can see me come by once and then see me finish.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs Burgers, shakes, a big ass piece of cake, a really nice brunch. I don't actually eat these things after my long run, but that's what I would want if I could have anything. I usually just eat whatever I can get my hands on, fruit, protein shake, leftover pancakes that my H made.
BTW, next time you're in town. You should check out Baked & Wired in Georgetown. Much better cupcakes IMHO and way more chill atmosphere.
Where is your finish line? Be specific Iwo Jima Memorial MCM - 10/26 Less than a month away!!!!
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Hanging out with the pup.
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? I always like it when I have a 5k or 10k left. Once I get close to the finish I tell myself I can do anything for 5, 10, 15 minutes, whatever amount of time I have left. In 5ks I tell myself that finishing the race will make me stronger in the marathon.
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. Why is it only Monday???
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? I like the funny signs.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs Coffee, I'm not usually hungry for a couple hours after a long run, but I want the coffee I skipped pre-race.

Where is your finish line? Be specific Iwo Jima
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Running way less is definitely #1, but #2 is getting a massage.
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? I bust it out whenever I need it, but I'm usually in trouble if I need it before I hit the halfway point. I break long runs into smaller pieces (usually 5-mile increments) and I often tell myself, "You can do this for another XX minutes. Hang in there for XX minutes" with XX being either the finish line or a water stop where I can take a walk break.
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. If you have to choose between doing a long training run a little bit faster or a little bit slower than "ideal," which is better? I think this may be an issue for me next weekend. I think slower is probably better, but I want to get other opinions.
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? Lots of people cheering and with signs. I LOVE the spectators. As much as I dislike the crowded course, I think I'd have a lot of trouble staying motivated with a small marathon.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs Haha, I often spend the last few miles thinking about my post-run bagel (everything with cream cheese) and a cupcake.

Anyone else racing this weekend that is slipping my mind? I believe cinco is taking on Freedom's Run on Saturday...AKA the race I will never run because OMG HILLS!
Where is your finish line? Be specific Downtown Corning, NY What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Lazy Sunday...I had forgotten what it was like to have a lazy Sunday! When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? When I'm struggling or start with negative self-talk, I give myself a little pep-talk. I may or may not have had an out-loud pep talk with myself during my 22mi training run when I was really struggling toward the end! I also play the math game to break things up. From a certain point, I tell myself - it's just a 5K, you can run a 5K any day (or something similar) Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. I'm trying not to think too much about it b/c my anxiety is pretty freakin' high. If anyone has done Wineglass and wants to give some pointers. I've checked the elevation profile and it looks like the worst hill is at mile 5 and it's nothing compared to the hills I've taken on in training...as long as I get through that, I'm good! What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? I'm loving that it's point to point through different towns, so I think just seeing people out cheering is cool with me. If spectators pass out cupcakes, they may have a new BFF! Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs Usually it's whatever brunch food I know if being prepared back at my house - pancakes, french toast, eggs, bacon, BACON!, home fries. Also cheeseburgers. And pretty much all sweets. I'm going to miss marathon training for all the calories it burns!
Where is your finish line? Be specific 11/8, Forsyth Park, Savannah GA. It's also where DH and I got engaged. (heart)
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? DH and I go for more bike rides. Also, dinner at a reasonable hour, since we're not running 10+ miles after work.
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? On training runs, it can happen at any point, but I'm usually fairly lucky to have decent longs runs during training. On those runs that suck, it's usually a "This one run does not define you or your race. You're going to be just fine." One race day, I have a bit of self talk throughout, but it kicks in during the final 5 miles. Lots of, "Just get to the next mile. Only 5k left. Only x more minutes. One more mile & you only have one more mile." etc.
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. No questions really, I just need to pull it together for these last few weeks. I haven't felt the same focus or drive since vacation, and then I just totally lost it this last week. I'm afraid I'm going to let what could be a really great race just slip away during this last month. I'm starting to doubt everything. I'm looking at the paces I need and I laugh at myself in a "Who in the hell do you think you are?" kind of way. Idk. I guess the self doubt is running high right now. I feel like I'm having a stupid runner identity crisis. I'm signing up for a 10-miler at the end of next month and I'm hoping that will help...but it could really do the exact opposite. LOL We'll see!
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? I've heard that the section that runs through Savannah state is really great, packed with students and cheerleaders. That sounds fun! I also love those moments during the last few miles, where somehow, someone just connects with you. It's always some spectator who locks eyes with you and just knows. They've been there. They've been you...and they just get it. That understanding and encouragement usually gives me that extra push to finish strong & proud.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs Usually it's chocolate milk, coffee, and an egg sandwich. We go to the same breakfast place after every long run, so I just daydream about what I get every week.
Where is your finish line? Be specific Kiawah Island somewhere - wherever the beer & screaming ladies are
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? massage and more relaxed jogs/walks with the dogs + husband if he's home!
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? I negotiate time - i.e. you can take a walk break in a half mile..... Then like i said before, i do A LOT of math in my head to distract me.
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related.
Marathon-related: Wines Not Whines - how far apart were your two marathons last year? We're thinking about running another in January in a FUN location, a couples' trip
Non-marathon related: baking cupcakes for a party this weekend. Salted caramel chocolate & lemon dream. Think i should add in a plain one - i.e. vanilla or similar???
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? a LOT of H&F ladies!!! I suspect the course will be pretty quiet, although i'll prep some jams for tuggyruns & me......
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs this past Saturday was mimosas on the dock (hot) It did NOT disappoint.
last year at the end of MCM, it took SO LONG to get through the finish chute, that i wish i'd packed a diet dr. pepper in my send-ahead bag. It took us forever to get back and i kept day-dreaming about the DP in my hotel fridge!
A HUGE CONGRATS to jordylee for conquering Quad Cities! I know it's not the race you wanted, but you made the best of it and holy crap, a 3:39 is still smokin'!! Hope you're feeling better today! Congrats jordylee! I missed the recap though???
And...Someone's gonna shatter some mileage records at Wineglass this weekend!! Get it spunkypenguin! Let's cheer her on as she takes on her first marathon this Sunday! Good luck spunky-p!
Anyone else racing this weekend that is slipping my mind? Not it
Where is your finish line? Be specific Iwo Jima memorial.
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Basically I just enjoy having my life back
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? When I get bored of running or when I start to struggle.
What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? Usually, I tell myself a) relax, b) it's too soon to give up and c) there's still plenty of time to totally fuck up your race so you cannot get lazy
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. Why is my left knee being an asshole? 57 more miles til taper time. Hang in there little buddy!
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? I'd settle for some creative signs.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs Sweet lobby is superior to gtown cupcakes. I always want coke during a long run. Sometimes I also want ramen.
Non-marathon related: baking cupcakes for a party this weekend. Salted caramel chocolate & lemon dream. Think i should add in a plain one - i.e. vanilla or similar???
Those both sound delicious! I don't think you need a plain option - if people don't like either of those, they are lame
Where is your finish line? In front of the Burj al Arab (that one is the sail shaped hotel, not the skyscraper)
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? SUPing or surfing
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? I haven't gotten back in my groove with this yet. It has been a while for me and long runs.
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? I have no clue, I hope there are spectators!
Where is your finish line? Be specific Somewhere on a beautiful Island with no cell phone.
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Reading!
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? I should probably work on this. Since I train with my sister, it's usually me talking her through the miles which super helps me.
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. I'm really wanting a new garmin b/c mine likes to go on the fritz lately and takes forever to find locations. However, I'm a bit attached. At what point do you consider a new garmin?
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? I don't think there will be much, but I'm really glad to be running with lb2006 !
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs Mostly pizza, burgers and wings. SO. Healthy....
Where is your finish line? Be specific Iwo Jima memorial
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Sleeping. I go into cleaning/organizing mode too. Always a clean house in the days before marathon.
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? Just counting down the miles and breaking it up into smaller sections.
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. Who is ready for taper?! I am so tired. We have a bug going around the house, so that is part of it, but I think I just want to get to more easy mileage.
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? Men in uniform. Maybe my own man, NOT in uniform (I see that too often, lol)
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs I am a cupcake fan, but during my long runs I'm more in the mood for fountain soda, chocolate milk, and or beer. Dehydrated much?
Wines Not Whines slower. Especially since this is your last 20 miler. Don't try to be a hero
Thanks. That's what I was thinking. My pace group is kind of imploding: there were only 5 of us to begin with, and one person has already run her marathon so she disappeared, and another person is injured, so there are 3 of us left. One of them *always* pushes the pace and tries to run closer to 9:30 instead of 10:00, which is the pace we're supposed to do (and 10:00 feels right for me). The other person was trying to run faster last weekend, too. So if they take off at 9:30ish, I'm inclined to fall back and run with the 10:30 group for our last long run. I know I could run it on my own, but we're doing a new route through neighborhoods with a lot of turns and I need to follow someone who knows where to go. Also, it's more fun to run with other people.

lb2006 My marathons last year were 3 weeks apart. I think 3-4 weeks is a reasonable break. I really needed those 3 weeks to recover. I did barely any running the first and third week, and minimal running the second week (I think I ran 8 or 10 miles that 2nd weekend, as my longest run).
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Running less is pretty much it.
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? I try to remind myself that I'm "just" uncomfortable, and discomfort is an unavoidable part of long runs.
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. I don't have any...yet.
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? Lots of funny signs, and people reminding me that I can do it.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs A huge brunch - last week I had an California omelette, cinnamon toast, bacon, some sort of waffles with bacon maple syrup, coffee, and coke. Yep, all of it! mrshandy for my 20 mile run last week I used one pack of Tailwind in one bottle, and water in the other. I took swigs of water every time I drank Tailwind to dilute it. On race day I'll take water from the aid stations when I run out.
Wines Not Whines slower. Especially since this is your last 20 miler. Don't try to be a hero

My pace group (9:30-10) imploded early on. There were like 3 runners and 4 coaches. I'm a solid 10 min/mi in the summer and I've been running with the 10-10:30 group all summer. We usually run around 10:15 and a group of us will do a fast finish. So you could do something like that too. Do the first 15 with the 10:30 group and finish at MP.
Or....you could come to gtown and run with DCRR. the 10-10:30 pace group is gigantic.
Where is your finish line? Be specific Well skwcm80 beat me to it, since that is my picture and all
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? 1. Massage, 2. Pedicure, 3. clean ALL the things, 4. putting together my epic playlist, 5. more time to sleep in!
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? This is where I struggle the most. I have a bunch of mental games, like remembering lyrics to songs/musicals, but the whole "you can do it!!" talk still feels like bs to me :/
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. Okay, first my question: For those of you that also side-eye the hell out of Pfitz's taper schedule, what do you do in its place for the two weeks pre-marathon? Also, would you think it would be okay to add in some easy XT a few days a week (like swimming/trainer rides), as a double and to unwind and keep the muscles happy?
Okay now answers: mrshandy I would sludge the tailwind in one bottle, put water in the other, and take slugs of the tailwind like it's Gu. If you can refill your bottles on the way that's another bonus. ebeth put your knee up to your computer screen so it can see this: Knee, you are NOT allowed to be a PITA. Not now, not during MCM, not ever. If you act up and cause more duress to the awesome and fast ebeth, I will come at you like Tonya Harding.
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? Some epic stuff. Chicago can party for 26.2.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs Okay, so for all of you that are all like, "X place in DC is better, get some standards geez", CLEARLY your cupcake last weekend was not accompanied by the awesome and beautiful Wines Not Whines, who not only busted out a good 16 miles but was a good sport and met me after my cranky 12 for coffee, bagels and cupcakes. Apparently I crave conversation for breakfast because I chewed her ear off instead of my bagel (OMG I am so sorry!). I also can't eat a lot right after I'm done so breakfast is kinda iffy, but later on I'm all about greasy carbs- chicken fried rice is amazing when I'm done and ready to eat something real.
I follow a pfitz/Higdon hybrid for taper. Week 16 I'll mostly follow pfitz, week 17 I'll probably do 5/6/5/10/3, week 18 I'll do 4/5/3
@vtcupcake, I've been doing Pfitz-5 and plan do keep that up during the taper. I want to make sure I get in the speed work each week, but I will still cut back the mileage. I'll probably keep up my cross training/strength in all but the week of the marathon.

Where is your finish line? Be specific Downtown Columbus, OH in front of North Bank Park by the river.
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? I don't know - tell me what to do with myself! I know the next couple of weeks are going to fly by.
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? During our longest runs, when it got really difficult at the end, my running group started playing some word association games to get our minds off the suck. It has worked wonders. Last week's 20 miler ended with: first person names a celebrity, next person has to name a celebrity whose first name starts with the first letter of the previous celeb's last name. Yeah, it seems dumb, but it did the trick. Sometimes I just need ANYTHING else to think about.
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. My race is 10/19. Taper officially started yesterday. Can anyone tell me how to tackle nutrition for the next 3 weeks? I know I should adjust my calories so that I'm not eating as many as I did during peak weeks, but what about the types of foods? When do I start eating more carbs? Are those whole grains or refined carbs?
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? Our marathon is put on by Children's Hospital, and each of 25 miles are represented by a specific patient who gives out high fives at the mile marker. They are such awesome kids. Mile 9 is the "angel mile" that is dedicated to those kids who didn't make it out of the hospital. Some of their parents line that mile. I've run the half of this race and was overwhelmed with gratitude for so much in my life. I hope those patients have a great time this year and that THEY get lots of support.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs I've never had these, but I've heard people rave about how great they are. I've considered having them shipped to me for after the race. Is this crazy? Are they THAT good? 'cause I love me a cupcake. On my long runs I fantasize about salty foods. Chips and guacamole, salty pretzels, popcorn. Man. I could tear up some chips and guacamole right now.
Pfitz calls for 6 days of running the week OF the marathon in 12/70. DUDE, no. Here is what I planned for the last 2 weeks. Rest/8/8/rest/5/5/12 Rest/6/7/rest/3/rest/RACE I do the speed work he has listed. For 55, I'd add an extra day of rest to the week prior. I'm pretty sure that is what he recommends as well.
Last year, before Freedom's Run, it rained a ton the week of the race, and I only did a 5 & 5 that week. I was very "fuck it" that week. Worked out fine.
This is probably weird because I'm brand new and you probably don't even remember responding to my posts, BUT... I've asked a few questions when I was struggling with some injuries and major self doubt and you've been really kind to me. You gave me some really great and knowledgeable feedback that not only gave me the nudge I needed to get a pro's input into my injury, but helped me get my head on straight when I thought I was stupid to even think I could do this whole marathon "thing." You can only get that kind of encouragement and feedback from somebody who gets where you're coming from. So, while I understand the self doubt, I can give you a little outside perspective on your identity crisis. To me, you come across as a passionate, seasoned, badass runner. The kind you take seriously when they give you advice.

I have no doubt you're going to crush this thing.
Thank you so much! That's incredibly sweet of you to say, and exactly what I needed to hear. My favorite thing about this board is how we are able to lift each other up when we need it most. Sometimes it's really difficult to get out of our own heads, ya know? I really appreciate it.
Thank you all so much for the congrats and encouragement! It was definitely a really tough race for me, and I'm glad to be done with it and move on. I think I learned a thing or two from it, so at least there's that.
spunkypenguin! Good luck this weekend, you are about to be a MARATHONER!!! WHOOP WHOOP!!
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Does eating count? I eat a lot during taper!
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? I play the whole "don't look at your watch until you bet to "X" sign. Or, "one mile until there is only a 5k left". Things like that.
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. Does anyone use gels with a higher electrolyte content than gu?? After this weekend, I think I need to revamp my fueling and start from scratch. I don't mind nuun for pre- or post-race, but I'm really not interested in carrying my own fluids during a race. Maybe I should try pretzels or something else?? Ugh. You would think I would have figured out this stuff by now!
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? It was really a hometown kind of race. Lots of families and kids out cheering, high school teams and cheerleaders, and of course lots of good signs.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs Chocolate chip pancakes. Always chocolate chip pancakes!
Where is your finish line? Be specific Somewhere on Kiawah Island
What is your favorite taper activity (beside running way less miles on the weekends)? Sleeping longer on purpose. You know...because I need rest.
When do you bust out the "self-talk", either during a race or a long run? What kinds of mental cues do you give yourself or what mental games do you have in your wheelhouse? When the run is just going to shit. Usually about mile 16 or so. It kinda goes "come on, you've done this before" or "you can do anything for ____ miles/minutes" or "Jesus, I hate running. Better hurry and get it done."
Who has questions? We've got answers! Ask a question and answer a question here, marathon/non-marathon related. I really got nothin, unless someone can tell me why the hell this is SO HARD.
What kinds of spectator support are you hoping to see during your marathon? Considering you girls will be the only people I remotely know, I'll be looking for ya. Otherwise, I'll try to feed off other people. Usually, my family doesn't come to races, so it's really not a big deal for me.
Why are Georgetown Cupcakes so dang tasty and why are they so far away!?!? Tell us the one food you fantasize about on your long runs I don't like their cupcakes. They aren't much better than what I can make myself, just prettier. I usually think about a few things: popsicles, Dr. Pepper, ramen, and coffee.
lb2006 My marathons last year were 3 weeks apart. I think 3-4 weeks is a reasonable break. I really needed those 3 weeks to recover. I did barely any running the first and third week, and minimal running the second week (I think I ran 8 or 10 miles that 2nd weekend, as my longest run).
well considering we are now debating on heading to the caribbean two days after the marathon (hot) - there won't be ANY running the first week
