You guys, since Cat died, I've been mixing our leftover canned cat food into Dot's dry food in order to use it up. I finally ran out today and she wouldn't eat her dog food plain. (I think I broke her with all that cat food.)
So I ended up adding a tablespoon of mayo to her food to get her to eat. Like tuna salad, only with kibble. Obviously, this is not a sustainable practice for good doggy health.
Any ideas for mix ins that I can use to get her to eat her dry food? I've not had good success with canned dog food in the past - she loves it but it gives her horrific gas and I don't know if I'm willing to experiment long enough to find one that doesn't.
We mix all kinds of stuff in Willow and Cricket's food. Willow takes 3 pills a day so we hide them in her "add ins." Plain yogurt, pumpkin puree, a dollop of homemade hummus, leftover pasta, cut up carrots, apples, pears, chicken broth, green beans, pretty much any fruit or veggie except grapes/raisins, and chard or kale since they don't like them. Shredded cheese or grated Parmesan are also big hits.
Green beans. Canned are fine, maybe rinse a bit at first and then more to ween him off the salt flavor from the cat food. Our vet recommended green beans as something that would make him feel fuller longer so he'd quit being such a beggar.

my old lady has become extremely picky with food over the last few months. tonight we added some ground turkey and rice to her regular food and she devoured it.
A little bit of mayo isn't really a big deal - it's basically just oil and eggs, both of which are totally acceptable dog-food add-ins. (well...as long as your dog doesn't have a weight problem. I've added both of those things to an underweight dog's food before though. Gives a very shiny coat.)
I used to mix plain, no-sugar greek yogurt into Puppy Derkins' kibble when she was a picky puppy. Mercifully, she outgrew that. (Still LOVES yogurt though.)
When I was a kid, when one of our dogs was on her last legs we used canned turkey gravy. Terrible for her with all the salt, but it was the only thing that was successful.
Same thing happened with our dog - he had to have his upper canine out in July and was in a ton of pain (that tooth is HUGE). He wouldn't eat to take pain meds, so the vet said to buy "meaty baby food" - they apparently love the smell/taste.
wouldn't you know - it worked. And then it broke our dog as he became a food snob

You guys, thanks SO much. I'm making a list of all the options to try. So far, I've had success with yogurt this morning (so hooray for that). What about an intermittent raw egg?
Also, bluefish - where does one buy salmon oil? That sounds disgusting - I'm sure she'd love it.
