Sweater with long sleeve shirt underneath

How do you do it so it doesn't make you look 20 pounds heavier?  I tried this morning but I just looked frumpy

I wear a cardigan sweater and leave it open that helps me lose the frumpiness since i am not rail thin.

I too would like to know. It seems impossible, unless the shirt underneath is super tight and both are very thin fabric.

I do it often, *but* it really does take the right sweater/shirt combo. I know some people do the trick where they put a cami over the button-up shirt to smooth it out before putting on the sweater.

It's better when the shirt underneath: doesn't have pockets, isn't too loose and/or is soft/worn-in

And it's good if the sweater: isn't bulky, but also thick enough to smooth out the shirt underneath, sleeves are just the right length (not too long, shorter is almost better and you can cuff the undershirt over it), sometimes also being just a tad short is good too

Lol yes!  That's the only way I could ever pull that off.  It seems unattainable..unless maybe the person is very thin.

i've found the easiest way is to get the sweater over the shirt and situated before you ever put it on. thinner sweaters actually tend to look lumpier, and i think the whole tank top "solution" just looks way weird.

i'm in no way rail thin, and i don't think i look that much heavier! it's all about finding the right sweater combo.

I button it, put the sweater over it, adjust it & slip it over my head. Otherwise it's a ruckus.

shirt is buttoned (minus the top one so i can get my head in), and usually on a hanger.

then sweater is put over and adjusted, then remove hanger, put whole combo on and then do whatever little adjustments are needed.

I'll generally go a size up in the sweater. You can also put a cami on over the button up to smooth it out a little.

I don't understand putting the shirt under the sweater then putting it all on.

I have these little clips that are similar to what they use to fit shirts/dresses on mannequins. It is effectively two little locking clam shell clips attached by a little piece of elastic. I put it on the back of the shirt to keep it all feeling tight through the waist.

However, recently I've been finding every dress shirt I try on has the armpits cut too low/wide for my build. As a result, I haven't bought a dress shirt in well over a year. So frustrated.

Since this thread got bumped, I'll come in and say this is what I do. 

Shirt needs to be super thin, preferably voile weight, and the sweater should be very lightweight cotton or cashmere.

This is a trick my Mom showed me in the 90's when this trend first came around.  She gave me the one that I use to this day, which based on my internet sleuthing is actually a sheet clip!

However, I think this brand may work better since it isn't a metal attachment:

I love this look but I usually get too hot. I can only do it with a few sweater/shirt combos; lots of them look weird.

I love this look and wear it throughout the fall with pencils skirts, but I agree, in real life I feel a little "frumpy" when I do this. Maybe if I was super tall and rail thin, I wouldn't feel that way! I do have a few button up shirts that are tighter than I'd wear without a sweater on top (softer fabric helps too). I also find that I need a slightly shorter sweater then normal--I'm petite and cropped sweaters tend to look best on me with this style.
