as long as they aren't see through and don't have that weird stocking type top. as much as i wish those are obvious caveats, i see too many girls wearing sheer tights/leggings/pants in public.

omg, I'd feel so bad for any kid wearing that in public.
ive only seen it once, but it was one time too many.
Dd loves leggings. She is in prek. I'm trying to wean her off of them and wear jeggings (carters has a bunch of different colors this year) and more skits. She doesn't care for jeans really. She probably wears leggings half the week and skirts and thicker jeggings the other half.
DD1 wears leggings as pants all the time. It never occurred to me that anyone would see a problem with this. I might need it spelled out as to why this is an issue? She picks her own clothes, so while not always matching or BOOTD worthy (lol), she looks like a 3rd grader.
I see no problem with an elem. aged girl wearing leggings as pants as long as they're not so tight they look painted on. And definitely not with shorter shirts, which some of them start preferring in 5th/6th grade. In general, I find they're still kind of baggy on kids that age and most tops cover enough that they're perfectly fine. And I'm on the conservative side with clothes for my kids, compared to a what lot of their peers are wearing these days.

When will she get to meet the baby?
Maybe today? Possible tomorrow when we get discharged. She is with grandma and had a ball with her cousins yesterday and wants to hang out with them again today after school. Plus we live about 45 min away from the hospital and she is in school till 3. I'd rather her be happy and rested then driving around the world just in order for her to see us today.
I think it's ok until about 3rd or 4th grade- this is just based on how when I was growing up kids got teased for wearing stretch pants instead of jeans past this point.
I think leggings are ok under dresses/tunics indefinitely.
There is actually quite the uproar surrounding this issue in my state right now, one of the high schools is banning yoga pants, leggings, and skinny jeans in part because they are "too distracting to the young male teachers". Apparently there was an assembly complete with a clip from Pretty Woman to illustrate how the way you dress can impact the perception of others.

Not with a regular length shirt. Leggings that I buy for my 6 year old DD are not like the leggings that are sold for toddlers; these are skin tight. If I can see a panty line under the leggings, they need to be covered by a dress or a tunic length shirt. There are plenty of other knit pant options that my DD can and does wear to be comfy.
Most of her "pants" look like leggings to me anyways. (Well she's 6 months, so not sure if that changes as they grow.) I would say as long as they are thicker looked more like pants yes it's ok.
I think leggings are acceptable until they start going through puberty or look like they are about to go through puberty provided the leggings are thick enough that they are totally opaque and not totally skin tight.
My general policy is that t-shirts are worn with pants (sweat pants, jeans, cords, fleece etc) and tunics and dresses are worn with leggings/tights/bike shorts unless they are very long or have built shorts. A tunic covers your butt. A t-shirt does not.
Sometimes my daughter will pick out something I'm not 100% on board with but for the most part I still pick her clothing and she is dressed based on my rules.
dd1 only wears leggings. She refuses to wear jeans or other pants. They are thicker material, and since she is so skinny, they are not very tight on her. 90% of the time they are worn with a tunic or dress, but she will wear them with a regular length shirt also.
This is SD1 exactly. Hates jeans with a passion, so all she has are leggings. She's currently in 5th grade, so we're sure peer pressure will kick in soon and she'll choose to wear jeans. In the mean time, it's not something that I really spend any time caring about. Most of her classmates also wear leggings as pants to school.

My kid hates jeans too. I've just started buying lots of dresses and sweat pants/soft pants because leggings are not always appropriate especially in winter. I don't like sweat pants as her primary option but she doesn't seem to care about how casual they look. In her class I see a pretty wide range of styles from highly stylized to pretty random.
I think anyone anywhere should be able to wear leggings.
I cannot believe that schools are banning them because of male students and teachers. What the fuck.
I just saw this on CEP, and I'm here with you. I personally don't care for them and am too self-conscious to wear them, but no one should be shamed for choosing to wear leggings. When are we going to move past the idea that men aren't responsible for their own thoughts and behaviors?
I see it all day everyday. It only starts look weird with like 4th graders on up. Just due to development issues. Usually by that time they're pretty self-conscious of such things so I rarely see it. Younger than that is totally fine.

I read this story yesterday, and it makes me RAGE. First of all, male students need to fucking watch their own shit. And male TEACHERS?! Jesus Christ. These are professional adults. Manage your own behavior, ADULT MEN. This is the most anti-feminist and ridiculous opinion I've ever heard. Maybe they should all get fitted for their burqas instead?
I was about to reply to this, but bunny already covered it. RAGE.

Honestly, make teachers should be speaking out against this idea because they should be furious that someone thinks that can't distinguish between a child and a grown woman wrt sexual attraction and have an inability to control themselves.
I wish I could get my daughter (she's almost 5) to wear something else besides leggings or yoga pants to school. She hasn't worn jeans in over 2 years and that makes me sad because I love jeans. I buy her tunics to wear with them but that can also be a battle when she wants to wear a normal cut shirt. She is VERY picky with her clothing, it goes down to what color hair ties she wants in her hair.
I once made the mistake of buying light pink leggings and her underwear showed right through, so I got rid of them. We don't need everyone seeing that she's wearing My Little Pony underwear.
