ML seems to have a disproportionate number, no? I know they have more posters but still! During the year or so I've lurked/occasionally posted there have been at least three -- JLM/LL/Vaba, Ottermama, and Woc/Montereybride just last night.
I started reading/posting on MM around 2010 and don't remember this happening. Did I miss it? Did it happen pre-2010 when there were more posters? Anyone care to share the stories?
I've been reading MM since 2003 and I'm having trouble thinking of one. Was .erin ours or ML's? (I'm not sure she qualifies as a catfish, but she was definitely something else).
What is the ottermama story? I have heard that she was catfish, but never heard the story.
I'll try my best - others feel free to jump in and correct any jumbled info.
She adopted a baby from a childhood friend. Flew out to receive the child but couldn't cross state lines until things were on the up and up. her husband stayed where he was and she lived with her family in a really unhealthy situation with lots of drama for maybe a month. there was a story thrown in there about carbon monoxide poisoning with the baby in the car and loss of consciousness. her husband then lost his job. a week later she posted about wanting to bake cookies in christmas jammies with her baby and within minutes there was a $300 toy amazon wish list up. collective ML shipped everything straight to her house. it seemed... strange. a few of us voiced this and were flamed. after the focus shifted back to otter, it came out that she was just kind of shady, many of her posts were probably embellished, and she was a poster on the bump who was not well-tolerated because of general shenanigans. the biggest thing that stood out to me was the fact that she had previously organized a collection for another poster and no one actually knows if the poster received the $$ (at all, let alone in full). there were many posts linked that asked why otter hadn't sent anything yet and her responses were questionable (sending it to the wrong address seems to be the go-to excuse on GBCN). the tracking number she sent was not valid.
after the amazon wish list, some posters called her out because she apparently hadn't acknowledged any of the gifts that were shipped to her. then, in typical ML fashion, EVERYTHING was questioned -- the carbon monoxide story, leaving her husband right after finalizing the adoption, stories of hiding money, and previous nest/bump drama. it also came out at this time that she decided to stay in the ML SS after given an out even though she knew she couldn't send a gift in return because of the job loss, which people obviously didn't like. she GBCNed and hasn't been back, and ML made a rule for no more wish lists.

There was one on the "Parenting After a Loss" board -- I forget if we were still Nest at that point or GBCN. We created the board for those of us from the Pregnancy Loss (miscarriage) board who got pregnant afterwards, so we didn't bum out the PL folks with happy pregnancy questions. Someone came on who was just strange, saying she was a kindergarten teacher and her daughter had died at age 5 from a brain tumor. She would just come on and post stuff like, "Alisa's favorite color was purple. She loved pizza." People tried to be sympathetic, but something was just off. Finally one of the other ladies dug around, and all the photos and even some of the "facts" about the kid were stolen from different blogs of parents of kids with brain tumors. I don't know if she was just angling for sympathy/attention or was going to work her way up to asking for money or something, but it was pretty gross.

This is funny, because in a fit of boredom the other night and a trip down a very strange rabbit hole, I ended up looking at threads started by this poster. It all started when I saw the last MM post had been made 14 (!) minutes earlier and went to ML to check out how fast they were moving. It was, of course, a depressing comparison lol. Anyway, she had a really active thread on there and I got curious about the back story. It was a winding, stalkerish road, I am properly embarrassed to admit. Still, I actually almost made a thread here about it, because it was so interesting. I wasn't going to use her name, of course, but the whole thing got me thinking, especially about marriage and divorce (she had a bunch of old threads, where just by title alone, you could basically watch the decline of her marriage unfolding, it was a little trippy). Anyway, I really do hate to confess to this because I really don't usually do that, but how odd that she was also happen to be a catfisher. Catfish? Whatever.
I'll admit she was on my radar but I will never again be one of the first posters to call someone out on ML. lol. lesson learned.
For those who haven't followed: -rocky marriage with lots of drama. pregnancy with an early loss; received a lot of support. had an affair (MLers suspect with her current bf) and got divorced. -"started" dating this new guy ("the boy" then "the German" after she was mocked for infantilizing her partner) within the past few months. posted about the surge of ML pregnancies with jokes about double-bagging. -BFP. she's all brave and going to do it on her own but let her boyfriend know anyways because it would be nice for him to be involved should he choose to be. boyfriend is excited for pregnancy; they're going to be a happy family. -boyfriend changes his mind and is no longer happy or ready. she falls asleep at his place and he wakes her up and asks her to leave his home. everything is OVER for good. -boyfriend has a change of heart but doesn't actually tell her this. she's invited to his place where his mom is there and is all smiley with her hands on MB's belly. boyfriend is happy again (but won't tell her why he changed his mind) and MB believes all is right with the world and romanticizes the entire thing. -whispers start about dates not lining up. MB posts a suspicious recap of an OB appt where she's told that her body is trying to hold onto a non-viable pregnancy despite blood work being indicative of a healthy early pregnancy. -new poster links MB's public photo bucket which was hilariously easy to find. she literally googled her username and it pops up (I can't believe I hadn't tried this!). the photo bucket is HUGE and filled with a shit ton of personal photographs that have been posted by MLers -- she'd been saving these photos for years. There are a scary number of ML children along with other creepy baby stuff. someone notices a target receipt with an address and last name and the connection is made the montereybride (generally well-liked but dramatic) is actually Woct (willisofoctober something or other who is also mental clorox). apparently this is BIG news, because Woct/MC previously posted full names and FB profile links on the nest and generally trolled/harassed various MLers. she also has been rumored to come off as generally unhinged, creating various AEs and responding to herself with those AEs. I was not around for those days so my recap is weak. also, she does not look like alyssa milano.

Is this really a catfish though, or just a real person who is shady and has a lot of drama? I'm being serious asking, because I know that when the adoption was going through, a very popular ML'er met both Ottermama and the baby, right?

There was that person with the giant cat photo. FutureMrsNielson? I forget what her story was.
And mrs.boobies or something who thought it was totally normal to spend 3 or 4 hours cleaning every day, including serious deep cleaning shit every week. Then she got a brain tumor.
I'm not sure if she had a cat, but FMN is here as Sunnysideup.
I also have my doubts if she's real. Her stories are so outlandish.

She was fake?? I remember she posted once that she changed her bedsheets everyday and I was all
I'm not sure if she was or not, but I remember people suspecting.
sorry - maybe catfish wasn't the best term. I understand she's a real person who adopted a real baby with a lot of fabrication or embellishment in between and some possible financial gain as a direct result of those embellishments.

God, I would DIE of happiness if every day was clean sheets day.
Was the brain tumor from all the cleaning product fumes?

I'm pretty sure that she is not the same person with the giant cat, but I am also pretty sure her story is not real.
I have bad nest memory so I rarely remember this kind of thing. I had forgotten about .erin! I do remember mrs. boobies (or whatever her name was), though, and think of her whenever I take apart and clean my coffee maker, because her initial post about cleaning mentioned that she did it every day.
I do think there are a few MM posters whose lives aren't as dramatic as they make them out to be. There's just no way so many outlandish things keep happening to the same people. I don't know if that even qualifies as catfishing though. I just try not to engage with them.
I think ML gets more crazies because they have more people over there. And all the catfish need an audience.
I agree. ML is more active and more diverse, and more...dramatic? for lack of a better term, than a lot of the other board. Definitely more so than MM. I think an ML-level catfish blazing onto the relatively calm waters of MM would seem out of place from the get go.
But I still don't know why people do it. ML is so good at busting people. Maybe they like the challenge?
