We own approximately 1/3-1/2 of the inventory of the Lego store, like 2-3 dozen Playmobil sets, basically every FP Little People set ever made, hundreds of "guys" (I.e., various action figures), a couple big sets of wooden blocks, Magnatiles, bristle blocks, giant cardboard blocks, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, a variety of toy instruments, approximately 2 dozen board games, a whole cabinet full of puzzles, a play kitchen full of food, a play store, a couple cabinets full of art supples, various ride on toys, a Wii, and Disney Infinity. Plus a bunch of crap I am no doubt forgetting. Plus the outdoor stuff--balls, bikes, basketball and soccer goals, frisbees, kites, stomp rockets, etc.
It is all scattered between the boys' rooms and our large playroom, and the toys fill many, many bins, cabinets, boxes, buckets, etc.
I have a 5 and 2.5 year old....we have never purged toys. Let's just say we have too many. It's a struggle to keep our living room from looking like a daycare. The kids are always dragging shit out of their rooms. We really need to to sell of or donate some items ASAP.
We have a lot of types of toys, and then a TON of those as well. Like Legos. I went and bought a double Kallax from ikea for my DD's Legos and it's filled up already. Same with my DS. Then we have the blocks, and magna tiles, and Zoobs, and Color Clix. Puzzles, Calico critters, Barbie, superhero play sets and figures. Ninja turtles. Dinosaurs. Doll stuff (American Girl threw up in our basement). Art supplies. And then the baby toys.
Stuff is relegated to their rooms and the basement. I have a couple things in the family room, mostly for the baby. The living room/dining room is kid free. The only way it works is that I am beyond anal when it comes to organization. I can't stand clutter.
I use the ikea trofast in my basement and in my DS's closet. Here's my basement:
The stuff I HATE is the piddly junk that doesn't go with anything. The kids have 2 single storagepalooza bins from Lan of Nod stacked as their nightstands and I purge those every couple months. It's amazing the crap I find in there!
I have stations set up in her playroom plus a table & 2 chairs where she eats. Sometimes it seems like a lot but as long as I can clean it up at night, I'm ok with it. I just put the toys she outgrows in the basement.

A shit-ton, if that's the official term for ohmygodmyhouseresemblesadaycare. All thanks to MIL. I'm much more minimalist and purge often. But she replaces faster than I can purge.
We just have two expidet sized bins in the living room, a drum, and some other bigger toys. Nothing really upstairs. But his birthday is in 11 days and he is getting a kitchen and accessories so I purged some things last week and put some nicer baby toys away in storage for hypothetical kid 2.
Some were bought as is (S, W, etc) but some I did to match up with the letter (M has a map, H has hearts, etc). It was a labor of love, but I knew I wanted a letter wall as soon as we got a playroom!

Well I am duly impressed! I got mine made on etsy lol
Aw, thanks. I had pictures of all the letters so I knew what size/color/shape I needed for the neighboring ones. There were some that turned out better than I expected (Zebra stripes) and some now as much (WVU colored yarn over the V). But it was fun.
I made a rule a few years ago that I was not buying any more toy storage. When something new comes in, something else has to go out to make room. That has worked pretty well, but as the kids get older I've been wanting to reduce the number of storage bins as well. We have too many to fit in their rooms and I'm tired of toys in my living spaces.
