What's the difference between a creepster and a catfish?
The idea of people not being who they say they are makes me anxious. I'm a naturally reserved person and my H's paranoia about posting private information on the internet doesn't help.
I trust the people I met are not catfish, unless they are really really good catfish. Though the first time I met rubber pants she did sound a little like a man and she didn't have a kid with her.
laurack I'm very unhappy with you for posting this because now I have to go read all the ML drama. As if I don't have enough of my own drama!!
There goes my afternoon.....
I have no idea what happened but I think an important thread was DDed? Care to give me a recap after your recon?
I just spent more time than necessary reading a thread about someone who was defending the catfish, so I haven't even read what actually happened. I will say that my favorite part is @tambcat lamenting that the pic of her that the catfish stole wasn't very flattering, lol. I would be annoyed too! At least defraud me using the nice looking pics!!

Seriously!!
Was wortard the one who gave your real name one time? Or was that a different crazy troll?

A catfish would be me saying i am Amanda Bynes. Got another DUI Ya'll and a new wig.
A creepster, is well just being creepy and saying weird things.
Seriously, all the catfish drama makes me never want to post pics or participate in gift exchanges again
I may be naive, but it doesn't bother me. Like if a long time poster here turned out to not be real, or to be a liar, it would piss me off for a minute, but I don't feel any risk. What can someone do with pics of my kids? There are 8 gazillion pictures of kids everywhere. What can someone do with my name from fb? I mean I guess they can figure out where I live, but even that knowledge seems pretty harmless to me. And obviously people in the exchange get my address, but it doesn't worry me.
I think the risk is much greater of a stranger coming to rob me than someone on here that is crazy and sketchy, hunting me down.
I've had someone figure out where I work and try to contact my old boss to get me in trouble. People *can* do crazy shit if they know enough personal information about you.

What happened? How did you find out about it? I am sorry someone did that to you!

Someone on here??
No no. Someone from IRC who was kind of stalkerish with me back in my webcam days. I don't think there are any crazies like that on April2012.

I can't remember exactly as this was quite a long time ago, but I think he admitted it to me at one point or I caught him because I was her assistant so I always answered her calls.

I can't get worked up about someone stealing my pictures. What are they actually going to do with them? It's creepy, for sure, but I don't know if I can get that upset about it.
Catfishes don't particularly bother me so long as they don't get money out of people.
But what if they're saving our pics? IDK that does creep me out. Obviously when I post a pic I know it could happen. But it does bother me.
I get the creepy factor but I can't see a plausible situation that involves my child being affected. I don't think it is acceptable and I'm all for driving that kind of catfish out of our polite society, but.....that doesn't really change or stop anything. So, it bothers me in theory but I find it innocuous in practice.

The way I look at it is this, I'm an adult and I have control of how much information about my identity I divulge here and to the world. My footprint is pretty big, and I didn't stumble upon that unknowingly. I am incredibly easy to find and I am okay with that.
However, stealing my kids' pictures and posting them elsewhere, or using them for another purpose, is the manipulation of two people's identities who haven't even grown into the chance to control their own privacy. It seems way more intrusive to me. My kids can't jump online and call someone out for catfishing with their picture, or for creating a persona and assigning it to their likeness, without their consent. It's similar to stealing from the innocent or those unable to speak out for themselves, which is inherently more sinister than the theft itself.
I know not everyone feels that way about it, that's just my take though.
I don't worry about the specifics of what they could DO with the photos, it's more a sign of their level of commitment/mental instability. So if they're keeping years of photos from their "friends" in an online community, what else are they creepy enough to do? It's a proxy.
Every time these things come up, I can't possibly imagine having the time. Or the ability to keep it all straight. I feel the same about having an affair. Besides the obvious reasons why I wouldn't do it, whenever I hear about people having an affair I think about the time and effort involved. Way too much work.
I don't like the idea of some creep stealing my kids pics, yet I also don't like the idea of not sharing pics of my kids here or on Facebook. So I share them and just hope for the best I suppose. I mean, what's the point of all these pictures filling up my phone if I can't force everyone I know to behold the magnificent beauty of my children regularly??

Ya. I guess my armchair psychologist position is that these kind of people are just creating a fantasy world through the internet. Most of this small group isn't dangerous creepy. In my head.

Well, I haven't been skinsuited yet. So there's that.

Every now and then I accidentally save a picture to my phone when I am looking from the app, and it creeps me out later when I am scrolling through my photos and some random April photo pops out. I promise I'm not a creepy photo stealer though lol!
@swkcm80 is my least likely catfish because I met her, she is awesome, and she let me use her as the subject for a case study I had to write. No possible way she is fake!

I've done the same with my phone! I get weirded out and automatically delete it
