DS never really latched on to a lovey, until on Valentine's Day when he was 2yo my mom bought him a 8" stuffed cat that looks like our real cat. DS aptly named him "Cat" and won't sleep without him. As I've told my mom many times "that cat is the best thing ANYONE had ever done for ANYBODY."
Well his beloved Cat lovey/security blanket has gotten very worn and nubby. So when I saw another one at the local toy store, I bought it and hid it away. About 2 weeks ago Cat's tail fell off. DS didn't notice. There was no hole on Cat's butt, so I left him as-is.
Well today DS was very upset when he figured out "Cat tail gone! Gone momma GONE! HELP!" So we took Cat to dada, who promised to "fix and bathe cat" (aka put replacement Cat in DS's crib while we were at Target.)
DS is thrilled with "cat all fixed, soft too!" Whew, thank god that went so well! That DS discovered the broken tail on a day DH was unexpectedly here to "fix" him. And he accepted Cat 2.0 with no trepidation. DS is currently sighing contentedly as he falls asleep, clutching cat.

Oh yes, backup loveys (or at least knowing where to procure them) are essentials! We've lost bunny on a few occasions and always been incredibly lucky to be able to retrace our steps & find her (once she decided to investigate the bacon and deli meat case at Sam's, once it was a display of necklaces at a cat show, once she just HAD to figure out what happens underneath the car when it rolls away...).
We lost DD's favorite animal on a walk. I knew where to order more, so I order 2 more just to be safe. The neighbor found the original lost animal, so we now have 3. At any one time 1 may be mia, but there are always 2 more.
My BFF's kid had a dolly and my BFF ordered three backups because of how insanely attached her kid was.
But then! Her kid found her stash of backups and the kid's WORLD WAS FUCKING SHATTERED. She posted a picture on IG of her kid holding all four dollys and losing her goddamn mind. lolol
The backup is/will be in a nondescript brown paper bag on the highest shelf in our closet. I can barely reach it WITH the stepladder. So I think we're good.
we have 4 of DD's beloved hippo blankets. We named it Pinky but she calls it Tinky or Dinky. Well she dug one out of the laundry basket and carried 2 around and dh said "now you have DOUBLE Dinky!" So now she insists she NEEDS "double dinky". When she has 2 though she only calls one Dinky and the other she calls Hippo. Not sure how she tells them apart.
lol she doesn't seem to mind that there are multiples. She knows that ones lives at daycare and the others at home. They are all equally gross from being chewed on. I just can't handle her carrying around double dinky, her bunky (monkey puppet), and now her "doctopus" night light. Too many buddies
DH tried to get DS to attach to this random tag blanket we bought at a farmers market five years ago. I was like dude what are you doing! ! We have no way of getting another. Mass produced loveies only.
DH had to to search hi and lo on ebay for a back up to DD1s lovey and paid the price after almost losing her Teddy in a parking lot. Well worth the price too because we've been able to rotate them in and out and they are now almost indistinguishable between the original and back up. At 6.5, she still brings him to school in her backpack and we joke he'll go to college with her too.
DS2 got attached to a lovey that was actually a gift for DS1 that he never cared for. A few months after DS2 got attached to it I searched everywhere to buy a backup (since it was over 2.5 years old at this point) and finally bought one on Ebay. I tried rotated the two of them in/out to give the original duck taggie lovey a break (since DS2 likes to suck on the corners and it's super nasty and worn despite being washed 2x a week) and he totally knows it's a fake and refused to sleep with it. He was about 18 months old at the time and just said "This ducky is broken".
So if we ever loose his duck he's we are screwed. He'll just have to get over it or finally accept that the brand new soft ducky replacement we have is better than his chewed up nasty saliva covered one.

Glad the swap went well!
Lucky for me, DS is flexible with his lovey. He actually has three different ones- home, travel/car, and daycare. As long as he has one of them he is happy and doesn't mind if we swap them out while one is in the wash. They don't even look alike so he knows there are 3.
Dd1's replacement we only got when she was 18mths old. He's a slightly different colour to the original but she didn't really notice. She did comment around a year ago or more about the colour. We told her he'd had a bath. We didn't switch after that, just told her he was being washed. We've now convinced her to leave him at home on school days so he doesn't get lost. She's ok with this. She's 3.5yo. But he wasn't washed too often - she rubs the side of her nose with his ear (a rabbit) while she sucks her thumb.
Dd2 on the other hand sucks hers in bed. We only give it to her for sleep. It stinks. Even after a wash. We have one at home and another in daycare, which comes home each week so we wash them then. I'm considering getting my SIL to get a third one for ease of laundry over winter. Can't get it here, only in the uk which is a pain
My kids don't get attached to one single item. I view this as both good and bad. If DD wants a specific toy that is missing we have to deal with the panic she gets if it's misplaced. DD2 only cares about her pacifiers "bibi's" and has been this way for 4 months since DD3 arrived. We have 30 of those (seriously) but never know where more than 3 are

I need to start rotating back up soon in so he becomes "well loved"
Damn my aunt for buying my kid those stupid Kohls Cares stuffed animals.
DD1 has to sleep with Horton the Elephant as her pillow, but he's basically now completely flat because she picked half the stuffing out of him through a hole in his leg. There is no getting her a backup of him because she'll be pissed when he's not flat.
DD wasn't into loveys until a few months back. I bought a backup and rotate them so they get loved equally
Now she has a stuffed animal that she takes everywhere. I am tempted to buy a second one because if anything ever happened to Echo she would be devastated.

Dd just loves stuffed animals period. She has two, an elephant and bunny that live in her crib, and a stuffed turtle pillow. All the others are interchangeable, she just loves holding something.

We have a Kohl's Cares turtle that isn't a lovey, but is a favorite. When we thought it might turn into a lovey, I looked to buy an extra & someone was trying to sell them on ebay for $25! Grr. I wish you could still bug them online!
neither of my boys have loveys...but DS2 is still young enough that he may get attached to something later.
