So I shouldn't feel bad about letting my kindergartner spend all summer playing with toys because I was exhausted from having a newborn instead of focusing on academics?

I love this. I am all about independent play over trying to quiz my kid about letter recognition, if only because it allows me to be lazier. Glad to see it's also good for him!
I think parenting has gotten super competitive and parents want ways to quantify how smart their kids are. The best parenting advice I ever received was before having kids in my developmental psychology class: don't worry about having the smartest kid, worry about having the happiest kids. Happy kids love learning.
