The BOB books (thank you idoinjuly ). They are so, so awesome. David is 5 and just started kindergarten. They are perfect for beginner readers. I got the first set at Costco for $10.

I need to make a costco run this weekend, so I'll check them out. Thanks!
The Pigeon series by Mo Willems- they're a lot of fun, and the books are made to be looked at by children- they don't have dust jackets and the bindings are really sturdy. I recommend all of his stuff, but it's important for kids that age to have books they can look at themselves without being delicate. The "How Do Dinosaurs" series by Jane Yolen has some board-specific titles in it too, and those are also fun with neat art. Neil Gaiman and Adam Rex's Chu's books are great too- about a baby panda. The art is amazing.

She LOVES the pigeon books. I don't think we get a nighttime reading in without them lol. She has them memorized so I don't know if it would work for actual reading lol.
You're welcome. If she likes the Pigeon ones, all the kids in my life right know love, love, love "Knuffle Bunny" by him.
Neil Gaiman has some books for slightly older readers too- "Crazy Hair" and "The Wolves in the Walls" and "The Day I Traded my Dad for Two Goldfish" are a few.
Sue Sue, we read every night and sometimes throughout the day and I try to make sure she sees me reading. I really hope I raise a reader
the letting them stay up at night to read was the kicker. Lights out, but if you're reading, well, you can stay up. lol
I would have gotten absolutely no sleep as a kid if my mom had allowed this. I routinely did it anyway and would stay up hours past my bedtime to read.
Rhyming Dust Bunnies is one of my favorites. David Shannon books are great, especially because a lot of them are limited vocabulary, and you can talk about what's going on in the pictures

The Gerald and Piggy books are awesome as well. When DD was in preschool she "read" them. Really she just had them memorized, but that is part of early reading. Starfall.com is also great for beginning readers.

I was just going to recommend these! DD loves them and they are entertaining for me too.

Yep, we started with set #3 of the BOB books from Costco and DD #2 did really well with them. There are others, including some sight word sets, so you can pick the one best suited to where your child is.

I also second the BOB books. My son is in first grade, and we love them. I learned about them here too.
We are also delving into the biscuit books. But BOB was a great start.

Yup--C is 4, has a flashlight and always asks for a book when I'm ready to leave the room. The conversations/singing he does on the monitor is priceless.
He loves the 'ready to read' books, we get levels 1 and 2 (transformers and ninja turtles right now). Even though he can't quite 'read' the words yet, he looks at the pictures, can memorize parts that we read to him, and he kind of follows the story and makes up what he really doesn't know; it's a type of early literacy. As long as it's fun and they have books in subjects they're interested in, they will love books and the formal reading part will click when they're ready.
Wilbooks.com has good early reader books, esp. the Larkin's Little Readers series. Also check out the Reading Rainbow app. It's awesome!
I just asked about Reading Rainbow! Did you get the subscription? Do they have activities or is it just books?
I did get a subscription, I think I got the 29.99 for 6 months option. No activities, but they have a good selection of books and some videos. My son especially loves the National Geographic Kids books. It also has the option to be read to or read it yourself. And the books are interactive in that you can click on some pics and they'll do things. Totally worth the money, IMO.
