I think it's Tuesday or Wednesday that are supposedly the days with lowest fares.
I just booked our Christmas flights and got an excellent rate on southwest - lower this I've gotten in the last couple years, even including non-holiday travel.
I've been looking at flights to the northeast, but when and where I want to go the prices are higher than I have ever seen them. It's just a little frustrating, but will likely be biting the bullet sometime this next week.
Whenever airfares go on sale. This depends a lot on the airline, and I've never figured out much rhyme or reason to it. We booked our Christmas/New Year's flights at the beginning of September, because Emirates was having a big sale to promote their brand new OSL-DXB route.
When I already have fixed dates, I use Kayak's daily alerts for fare watching. Otherwise I just check once a day using a Chrome incognito window.
