Honestly, I think some of the patronizing, "oh just wash your hands!" "Sure, Liberians are getting sick but WE know so much more!" "Just don't roll around in bodily fluids!" narrative has led to this mess.
While I do think it is a little patronizing, I think some of it was necessary to calm the general Q public down. Healthcare workers deserved better.
Yeah they deserve proper training and materials. It appears from the replies of those close to that industry they are not receiving that.

I was at DFW on Sunday, crammed into a disgusting waiting area in the construction zone where there was literally not one seat open.. thinking, what if someone just threw up right now?
This is also why all the patronizing, IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN HERE LIKE IT DID IN AFRICA dialogue was offensive.
I am currently 5 miles from Cleveland Hopkins Airport and
I AM AT LEVEL FUCK
We flew out of Cleveland last week, so we're okay, but it still hits close to home. We flew frontier and all their flights leave from the same terminal. It's not just the 100+ people on her flight potentially at risk.

I actually flew out of Akron (to fucking LA GUARDIA) last weekend. Akron is where she was actually visiting so I am so fucking grateful that Akron didn't service to Dallas. OMG.

Well to be fair, we haven't yet remotely seen the level of destruction here as we have in Africa, and I don't think we will.
I really think people need to STOP the freaking out hyperbole as if this is a Hollywood movie set and Dustin Hoffman is running around screaming "code red code RED MOTHER FUCKERS*!!!"
You mean a country that has never ever seen Ebola before isn't handling it 100% perfectly? I'm shocked. Really. Here is my shocked face. Mmmhmmm. Freak out when mistakes are made and no course correcting occurs. But so far, ONE person has died from Ebola that he contracted elsewhere and his whole situation was mismanaged. A second person got it from him and she is doing well. A third person got it from him and her health status is unknown. How the country responds to these situations should help you decide what level of freak out you revert to. In all three situations it looks like the medical field and the CDC are making changes in how we handle this. That should give some comfort.
* I don't know if he said this in Outbreak but it sounds funny to me so I'm going with it.

Sure.. and perhaps that was poorly worded. But I feel that the refusal to focus on the very real possibility of the spread of a deadly disease just because this is "America" and we are so much better than "Africa" did us all, particularly health care providers, a disservice. We are a mobile society. It doesn't take much to allow the spread of infectious disease in a society that freely travels and/or spends time in social settings, and its disingenuous to believe that we as Americans are immune from these issues.

I mean, generally, like, national level freak out I am not at Level Fuck. But at a "I have friends that work at an airport where an Ebola patient was just visiting - level"...it's hard not to be kinda freaked.

You have to be symptomatic and someone has to come into contact with your bodily fluids to get it. In terms of infectious diseases it's not really all that easy to catch. Measles is far far far easier and we live in a country where yaknow, upper class overly educated white women like to scoff at the measles vaccine (probably while sipping a PSL, natch).
I was pretty logically tra-la-la, we got this, it's not really contagious up until we heard that she traveled and reported symptoms the very next day. I mean, I always feel like shit when I travel anyway so I wouldn't think it was weird to feel like shit while on an airplane.

Logically I know this. It's hard to stay 100% logical when it gets close. I'm at like...95% logical 5% SHIT right now.

I know however you get it from Vomit and Poop right? There is very little in saliva , correct? If this is the case I am going to feel a lot better.

That's why I am here. And why when I freak out I appreciate when people bring me back to earth.
