So, we're leaving for Nepal on Monday. We are/were planning on hiking the annapurna circuit. If you've seen the news at all, there was a nasty blizzard/avalanche, and around 20 trekkers have been confirmed dead and still many many who are unaccounted for. Holy shit.
I've got about 3 days to research a plan B, because I am assuming that much of the Annapurna region will still be unaccessible. The lack of reliable information about the trail conditions is frustrating, and it may just end up being a "go there and see what the locals say" type of thing. We aren't going with an organized tour or anything, so we've got some flexibility but our timeline is unfortunately pretty rigid. I don't know much about other treks in the area that may be unaffected.
Has anyone trekked in the region and have info on alternative routes? I am a little bit freaked out...
I did the Annapurna circuit 4 years ago. It's a tragedy what has happened. Unfortunately that trek consumed our 3.5 weeks there so I don't have many other recommendations. I did use this book in my planning though and would highly recommend getting it if you haven't already. There are tons of routes in there.
It's challenging to get into regarding conditions that is accurate fom here. That being said, the Thurang la is no joke. I was in a group of 3 and we all experienced some degree of altitude sickness on the pass. Personally I would be reluctant to take on that tip right now given snow conditions. And I hate saying that as its the most amazing place I have ever been. I would come up with a plan b for now, and then ask around when you get to Kathmandu. There are lots of treks in the Mustang region that I have heard recommended, but it's quite different geographically from Annapurna, and I believe requires a permitted guide due to additional regulations. Best of luck- you will love Nepal, even if it ends up being different than originally planned.
We decided to go the Everest base camp route. We fly from KTM to Lukla tomorrow morning! We will have to come back someday for Annapurna, but I think this is the best choice for us given the circumstances

Enjoy! Color me green. I am desperate to see the Khumbu Icefalls. I was so disappointed when I found out the were on the Nepali side, because we only went to the Tibetan base camp.
