I am not a runner by any means but I try. I was running on the treadmill and about 10 minutes in I got a horrible pain under my rib. I had to stop. I was so mad cause its the only thing that stopped me. I did run 1 mile and 1/2 in 15 minutes but wanted to get to 3 miles. How do you prevent this?
In cross county, coach had us put our hands in the air... And it did work, although I suspect you don't want run with your hands above your head in the gym but the reason it worked is because it made us stand up straight and get more oxygen.
So now if I get a side cramp when i run, I slow down, adjust my posture, and take slow deep breaths.
Those are the worst. In addition to the other suggestions, I find I am less likely to get them if I am drinking water slowly over the course of my run rather than large amounts at a time.

I was also going to ask about eating - that usually does it for me. I usually just try to regulate my breathing and push/grab the side stitch (I don't know if that actually helps, but it makes me feel better lol).
I actually have to take shallow breaths to get rid of them. The long slow breathing just makes me feel them more. I also get them more when I'm dehydrated.
I read to exhale when the foot on the opposite side of your body hits the ground. I've been using this trick for 3 months now, and it always works for me. As soon as I feel one starting, I focus on this breathing technique.
