We'd like to replace our current couch and loveseat before our big Christmas party ... our cats picked at the arms and now they look horrible MH is against putting slipcovers on them, but I may push for those if we can't buy a new set before December. We don't want to go back to a chain store again (current ones are from Value City Furniture), but we really don't have the cash to buy something from a high-priced store either, so we're going to look around at IKEA later this week. Any recommendations?
No kids right now, just two cats. We don't need sleeper sofas. And, yes, we've provided the cats with scratching posts and we've sprayed that deterrent stuff on the arms and we sprayed the cats with water when we caught them doing it, but we couldn't watch them every second.
There are posters on H&G that like their Ikea couches - I can't remember which posters or which couches though. I guess I am not much help, my bad. But I have heard good things about how they hold up, which is reassuring.
I have 2 ektorp couches and they've held up fine for 3 years with 3 kids and 4 cats. I have the basic slipcovers on them. The navy has faded a bit, but white washes well.

Another Ektorp here. We have one cat and a big dog. The cat does like to pull at the arm, the cover doesn't show much damage. We've gone to having normal everyday covers and then a guest set. Our dark navy ones have held up except the mesh under the cushions - but the dog really helped facilitate that as she likes to try to bury things under the cushions. They haven't faded much,I with the woolite dark. They are 5+ years old and not the same as the current navy covers, I think the Red and natural/white are still the heavy washable stuff. They changed the material our gray ones are the new material and it even feels different., it is machine washable. You have to check as some of them are dry clean only.
We have had an Ektorp for 6 years or so. It has held up well, but I think it is really uncomfortable. I would not want it to be our main couch for that reason (ours is in DS1's room).

We have the Ektorp corner sofa and love it. We have it in the dark brown and it's super comfortable. Our cats like to sleep on it but I haven't seen them scratch on it. It vacuums well and is long enough to sleep on.
For the cats: www.softpaws.com/ Seriously. My cats HATED these things so much that it only took 3-4 applications before they finally started following our redirection to the scratching post.
Scratch the couch? Soft Paws for you!
Scratch the door frames? Soft Paws!
They learned very quickly that scratching anything other than their designated scratching post = Soft Paws.

Not the Karlstad. We suffered through the uncomfortableness for 5 years and then we moved them to the basement and bought a la z boy. I'm not sure I'd buy another Ikea couch.
But it's like any mid-range furniture store. They have pieces ranging in price from $500 for a sofa to $5,000.
I personally hate the look of the Ektorp - something about that big arm - but I like the look of some other sofas. But once I put on the nicer cover I am normally up to $1,000+ and then you have to haul the thing home and assemble it.

No input on the couches though, LOL.
We have used these for years, but a couple weeks ago, we realized Velociraptor hadn't shed one of his claws and the cover grew into his pad. $300 later, he's fine. But we're done with those forever.
We have 2 Ektorps in our basement and they are really comfy for the price. If our sectional would fit down the stairs, I'd switch our current family room and basement furniture. Sitting on our sectional (also purchased at VCF) practically half the day, every day I've been home has made me realize we need a new one.
