So I keep trying to start my stash for going back to work and I keep just feeding it back to DS. He wakes up like right after I finish pumping when I have nothing left in my boobs.
How did you build your stash? Is there a best time of day?

I tried to pump as soon as DD fell asleep, in hopes that I would have an hour (or more) until I needed to feed her. If she woke up right after I was done, though...I would just feed her on the boob anyway. She could always suck out more than the pump could. It took a little extra time, but she seemed satisfied.
I would feed him off one side in the morning, then pump the other side while he hung out on the playmat and I ate breakfast.
This is almost exactly what I do. He feeds immediately upon waking up and then I have about half an hour to get some breakfast and get organized, then I pump while he rocks out on his playmat.
What happens when you nurse him after you're done pumping? Is he showing signs that he's not full?
I would pump one side after feeding the other. I aimed to do it as soon as she fell asleep, and sometimes would do it if she was happy but awake, though I found this more stressful.
I pumped in the morning. If she got hungry, I just fed her at the breast and switched sides until she got full. I never once fed my baby what I had just pumped.

M has been taking a good nap most mornings, so I'll feed him around 7, put him down around 7:30, and pump around 8. He doesn't need to eat again until 9 or 10.
I've fed her after pumping, and while she usually takes longer she still gets enough to eat. Your boobs will continue to make milk as your baby nurses--there's not really such a thing as "empty" boobs.
in the morning I would feed while pumping the other side. He would trigger the letdown and it would be much faster filling the bottle while he is latched. I managed to get 200oz in the freezer while on ML by pumping once a day every day starting at 4 weeks of age.
In order to "build up" the pumping boob I feed one side to him twice in a row
Babies are much better at getting milk than pumps is my understanding..
Like @tokenhoser, I don't feed my baby what I've pumped. A lot of my early pumping sessions were to relieve engorgement when DS would take a longer than usual nap. But even. If he woke up just after I pumped, I would still put him to the breast. He never seemed dissatisfied.
Once I started having to leave a bottle for him because I would be away from him, I started pumping either first thing in the morning or MOTN (this seems to be when I get the most milk) for the coming day's bottle. Again, if he wakes up, I just nurse him. Now i usually freeze what I pump in those sessions and rotate out what I already had in the freezer., unless there's a question of whether he'll actually need it. (Sometimes I just have the sitter bring him to me if I am wah when he gets hungry, but I keep a bottle of fresh milk ready in case the timing doesn't work. I don't want to "have" to feed a bottle just bc it has been defrosted.)

This. I'm too lazy to waste a pump session.
+2. Baby is more efficient than the pump and your body is continually making milk.
I pumped shortly after his first feed of the morning, maybe half an hour later. I usually got about 3 oz/day that way.
ETA: I was home with DS during the govt shutdown when he was about 7 months old. During that time I pumped in the morning like during maternity leave, but I added in an extra pump right before I went to bed, around 10pm. I was getting 2 oz each session then. I didn't do the night one during maternity leave because sleep was so precious then.

This time around with DD, I intestinally gave myself an oversupply. With my first, DS, my supply tanked when I went back to work.
This time, I would feed from one side and pump the other through out the day. DD had green poop in the beginning, so this was also a technique to make sure she got enough hind milk. I got most of my extra milk in the morning. I kept a bottle in the fridge and added a little at a time until I got to 7oz. I would them put the milk in a lansinoh bag and freeze. I took supplements (fenugreek, mother's milk tea) to boost my milk supply. In the early days of my maternity leave I would get about 7-10 oz extra a day, toward the end maybe 5oz.

Haha. I have 6 extra oz frozen. If I could get Mt toddler to stop wanting to nurse every times the baby died maybe is actually be able to build up a stash.
