I use an old tire that has a slit in it from a piece of glass, and many miles on it. It's not fit for use outside anymore, but on a trainer there's almost no risk of puncturing the tube through the tire slit.

I just bought my bike a few months ago so I don't have any "bad" tires, unfortunately.
Buy something super cheap, even online with free shipping (Amazon Prime maybe?). Cheap. Did we mention cheap? Or see if anyone you ride with has an old road tire you could have free. Free is even better than cheap.

Yes, I like cheap
BF suggested just running my road tire on there as it is 5 months old and I did a lot of riding this year already. Then, buying a new tire in the spring. Thoughts?
If you are going to ride outside at all, I wouldn't run your current tire. The trainer will make it shaped flat. You don't want to ride that on the road. Trust me. Use that tire and buy another new nice tire now. Swap them out when you ride on the road or trainer...or find a super cheap used wheel for when you use the trainer. Swap the wheel when you ride outside.
In your area are there are any bicycle coops or community programs? In my area we have a community program that recycles bicycles wherein members earn bikes by rebuilding them, or you can buy bikes and/or parts on the extreme cheap. That's what I've been doing to gain some hands-on maintenance skills (only I donated the bike I rebuilt back to the program.) If it were my area, you could probably get an entire wheel for <$10, which would certainly be fine for on the trainer.
