This is my first experience with a group/mandated company costume. Apparently our VP is dressing as Gru next week and we're all supposed to dress up as minions. Any suggestions for where to get overalls cheap? While I enjoy Halloween, I'm not thrilled with being told what to dress up as... at least this is a pretty easy costume. Another team is being legos from the lego movie.
Does your company make you dress up for Halloween?
Or you would wear jeans or blue pants and then get blue suspenders, or make them from ribbon/felt, to look kind of like overalls.
I've never been told/advised to dress up. I don't think I've ever even been invited ... I've worked at some jobs where people just show up on Halloween in some sort of costume, either something subtle (devil horns, wings, a mask) or a full-on costume.
At my current job, a bunch of people in my section dressed up last Halloween. I wasn't invited to, nor did I want to. They're younger than me and it's not really my style to dress up at the office anyway.
Side note: Googling "minion costume" brings up a lot of "sexy minions" outfits
As if being forced to dress up isn't bad enough, you have to be a minion? C'mon, that's just a straight up stupid choice for a group costume in a work setting.
Haha. Yeah, that's kind of what I thought. Apparently Halloween is a big deal at this company. I was kind of excited about it, until I found out that I have to dress as what they tell me to! I was more excited when I thought I could make my own costume, although with how tired I've been lately I was planning to just skip it altogether (maybe wear a funny hat). It is just so stupid that we are being told what to dress up as.

No no no. Mandatory costumes, eh, NSM but fine. Mandatory costumes with a mandatory costume choice? No way. Especially not this choice, which is, as PPs have said, demeaning at best and offensive at worst.
People don't really dress up at my office, but I did wear a fun wig last year and people got a kick out of it so I think I'll wear one again this year. It helps that Halloween is on a Friday which is casual day anyway.
It pissed me off one year when we were told to dress up but weren't assigned mandated costumes. I went as a business witch - wore a black suit with an orange blouse, orange skeleton earrings and a witches hat (hot). The boss wasn't happy but I didn't care, I hate dressing up in costumes and refused to buy or make one. It was the one and only year it happened.
I had to google to see what minions were, so no advice on a costume

Wow. How demeaning. You should totally be an evil minion! You know, one of the purple ones (see avitar). That would be kind of a f*ck you, wouldn't it?

OMG that's hilarious! What a great idea. Then I could just dress in purple. I wonder if I can get a purple wig somewhere...

Lol. Welcome!!!
But really I would check target for the overalls. Or you can hide out in my building cause we are ignoring the company holiday:)
All the teachers at the school I teach at dressed up as minions last year. I just wore jeans, a yellow t-shirt, and then used blue duct tape to make suspenders.
Oh man!!! Now they are organizing a group order for stupid minion costumes. The costume costs $40!! Is it bad that I said "no thanks, I'm not spending $40 on a costume!". That was before I realized pretty much everyone else is buying them. This is so freaking stupid!
I'm thinking I might just do the evil minion, wear purple and spray my hair purple (thanks jena for that idea!).

Newp. $40 for a mandatory one-time use costume is insane.
Plus, homemade costumes are almost always better than storebought.

Wear your regular work clothes and tell them you did dress up as a minion.

I love this idea!
No freaking way would I spend $40 on this "mandatory" costume. That's ridiculous.

If it's mandatory then the boss needs to buy them. Otherwise no way.
