I went by the bank today and got a copy of the cleared check that I sent to KY in Feb. 2010 for the full amount of taxes owed for 2009.
I called the state and talked to the guy handling my account. Basically, the state lost my 2009 return and were trying to penalize me for it. The guy seemed surprised that I had the check and it was stamped with the number the state puts on the checks they cash. It said it was "very surprising" that my check was obviously cashed by the state of Kentucky yet they didn't have a record.
Finally, he told me that he would apply the payment to the account (after he found a record of the check but still no return). He then said, "Even though you would have still owed a few hundred, I'll just zero it out because the account is 5 years old."
I'm glad he zeroing it out and sending me confirmation, but I kind of wanted to be like, "I DID pay the full amount owed, which is why I wrote it on the check. If you had my return you'd know that!" Oh well. One less thing to deal with, thankfully.
