Just under 4500 sq ft. There are 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms upstairs, plus 2 rooms in the finished basement that could easily be used as bedrooms, except there are no windows (and a full bath down there, too). We have 2 kids - not planning to have any more, but if we did, we would not have to move. It's our forever home unless we ever relocate.

Our addition is still (ugh) under construction. Pre-addition, home is 1200 sq ft, 2 BR, 1 BA. After our addition and finishing the basement, we'll be somewhere between 2500 and 3000 sq FT (we're not finishing all of the full basement as a large portion of it will still be needed for storage). The house will then be a 4 BR, 2BA home.

*brought to you by a client asking me if we wanted to buy their home but I think it might be too big for us*
~3300 SF--4bed, 2bath up plus a full 1bedroom apartment that currently my kids have totally taken over (TV room, Playroom, Art room (kitchen), 2 big toy closets plus their bathroom). So total 5bed/3ba
I have 4 girls, doubt we'll have more, even if we had 1-2 more, we'd probably stay.
We could live here forever as is fine....but we waiver between being tempted to move back to old small house (2200SF, 3bd/2ba) & live debt/mortgage free vs the other extreme of popping the top (attic) on this house & adding another ~1000SF making it 7bd/4ba. We won't be able to move within the neighborhood for years, the prices are incredibly high & we got lucky in the RE downturn to get in at all.
How big is your house (# of rooms and square footage)?
2500 sf above grade, 800ish sf finished basement.
4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths (one full bath is in basement)
Main floor has the living room, dining room, kitchen + breakfast nook, family room, pantry, half bath, and laundry room.
Upstairs has our master bedroom with en suite bath, sitting room and 2 WIC, 3 regular bedrooms (one currently set up as guest room) and 1 regular bath.
Basement has the bar, home gym, home office, second family room, and bathroom.
How many kids do you have?
Just one for now, planning 1-3 more.
Will you need to move to be comfortable if you have more kids?
If we have 4 kids total, we'd probably consider moving depending on the boy/girl split and birth order.
We live in a 990sf condo. It's two bedrooms and one floor. We have two kids, who obviously share a room. Ideally we would have a 3-4 bedroom 1800-2000sf house/townhouse. It's definitely a tight fit and we have no room for entertaining but honestly it's been kind of nice while the kids are small. No stairs to worry about, less stuff to kid-proof, and they have the run of the place and can be in any room and we can hear what they're doing no matter where we are. I think by the time they're 5-6 we'll definitely be over the cozy living, though.
Right now we're renting a probably 2000 sq ft house. It technically has only one bedroom, two bathrooms. When my mom bought it she removed the closet and door from one bedroom to make it an office. The whole upstairs is one big room, probably 800 sq ft with a bathroom my mom had built to make it a master. We aren't living up there though because we ripped up the stairs that the previous renters made unsafe. Our bed is in the very open office and J has the bedroom. No basement.
It's a pretty big house(by my standards) but the layout is very shitty. And the top floor is only a half story, so a lot of the space up there is unusable. MH wants to make that a full story and add a bedroom up there, but lol. We haven't had stairs or the use of the upstairs for 4 months.
We just have J. Another kid would be possible for about 6 months until we'd want to kick them to their own room like we did with J. His room is way too small to share.
We wouldn't need to move to be comfortable if we have more kids, but we won't be having any more kids for other reasons. We would probably be more comfortable with a bit more space. But we certainly aren't uncomfortable with our current space. We'd like to move to have more land, but where we currently live is super convenient to everything and we are really happy with our current daycare and school district. *sigh* Maybe we'll just remodel.
Probably not our "forever" home, but I'd be very happy here for a long while and with another 1-2 kids in the mix. Unless the price was right and then I'd sell tomorrow.
A little over 1800 sq ft plus an unfinished basement. 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms. We only have one kid so far, and anticipating moving to a bigger house in 5ish years.
2050 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms. One of them is a "flex" room that we use as the TV room. All the rooms feel a little small, especially the non-master bedroom and kitchen.
It might be out forever home, but I suspect we will renovate or move eventually.

1550 s/f, 3 b, 2 bath. Plus fenced in yard space in the front and back.
One of the bedrooms is used as an office/den/library, and we have a futon for guests.
We will move into a bigger home after #2 comes along. We have DH, myself, and DD right now, plus x2 indoor cats. We have x2 chickens in the backyard. Sometimes I feel insanely cramped. But I do love our house so much, and it's the perfect starter home. It's all one story, and completely renovated.

3000 square feet + another 1000 unfinished, but heated and cooled square feet. We have 3 bedrooms 3 bathrooms really, though it is technically 4, with the 4th being a main floor office. It is stubbed for another daylight bed and bath in the basement, but we don't need it.

2300 sq ft, 4 beds/2.5 baths, no basement.
One baby on the way. Planning on 1-3 kids total, leaning toward less so far.
We might consider a bigger house if we were going to have 4+ kids, and would definitely want to move for 6+ kids (3 of the bedrooms are nice and big and I'd be comfortable putting two kids or two adults in them, but the 4th seems too small for that). But this is totally hypothetical: I really can't imagine wanting to have that many kids.
I freaking love our house, but it has felt enormous for just the two of us. On the other hand, I love knowing that we will never outgrow it (we're pretty committed to staying in this area for the long haul). And we got it for a fantastic price (similar to other house on the same street that were much smaller), so I don't feel like we wasted money on the space we aren't using.
Also... Probably would want to subtract 1 from all those numbers of children if either of us ever has to have a home office for work (we'd share if we both needed one), which in our field is definitely a possibility in the future, if not our preference.
This is not a post I want to win with the smallest house
Where are the other ppl that live in a box?
I'd guess around 1000 sq feet. 2 bedroom apartment. Strikes jealousy in the hearts of most NYC visitors, but considered a box by anyone beyond the tri state area. Also, I guarantee we can compete nobley on rent/mortgage costs even though we lose on size.
*ETA the jury is still out on whether we could add a child here or not. We could definitely make it work if that was otherwise best for us. Currently at two babies.

zarapipe - I did live in a box! We sold our 750 sqft 1 BR apartment last month. I did not mind the size because I've lived in apartments my whole life, and we could have stayed longer if it were at least a 2BR. I'm hoping I don't become a crazy hoarder due to the additional space we will have - I really do love small-space living.
1000 sq ft town house for a family of 4 soon to be 5. 3 bedrooms (one is tiny - fits a single bed and side table) and one bathroom.
DH thinks it's way too small. I like the size but the layout isn't great.
We live in a way smaller home than our friends that are in the same income bracket as us and have kids. But I hate clutter and cleaning so the small home works for me. Plus I like having the kids close at hand.
And financially... very little money stress, we can afford for DH to have a personal trainer, me to stay home, eat well, travel and vacation, etc. We spend roughly 13% of our after tax income on rent and could easily double that if we wanted to get into something nicer and bigger. *We do own another property that is rented out.

Yeah I agree, easy to clean! They could have easily fit 3 bedrooms in our house which would solve our problem, but instead did two larger bedrooms.
700 or 800 square feet. 2 bedrooms and 1 bath. London apartment. It's actually a decent size. The second bedroom is pretty small though. My ideal house in a high cost of living area (London, NYC) is a 3 bed/2 bath, at least 1,500 sq ft with a decent sized yard.
3500 SF + 1000 SF finished roof patio 3bd, 3 full bath and 2 half bath Plus a big rec room that is currently serving as a guest room Smallish city yard
It is certainly too much space for us. And we have a very modern house with a completely open floor plan so it's not the most kid-friendly place in the world (we're taking on baby proofing of our four-story, open-on-all-sides floating staircase this weekend). AND it's an enormous pain in the ass because the roof (flat to accommodate the deck) leaks and is constantly incurring four-figure maintenance bills. BUT we will not move because we love the style of the home and the location and view are awesome and at this point we've sunk a bunch of cash into it and should wait for a few years to sell anyway, LOL.

Upstairs is 1680sqft 3/2 We have a 400sqft apt in our garage that has a full bathroom & a kitchenette.
I'm sure it's big enough, but, I would prefer a 4/2. We were planning on moving, but now we've decided to stay. For now. The schools here are crap so we will reconsider when DD is ready for school.
2400 sq. feet, 4BR, 3 kids. The space is great and perfect for our needs.
We had a 3 BR 1600 sq feet, which was a tad crowded for our family of 5. The older two shared a room, but it would have been more difficult as they got older. We would have wanted to have the girls share eventually. The biggest difference in between our old house and the new one, other than the extra bedroom, is the yard! We love having so much space for the kids to run around and play.
We own an investment condo that is 2/1 and we hope never to live in.
The house we are in now is a two-family home. We rent from my IL's (they live overseas). It is perfect for us right now- we have 2 BR/ 1 BA on main floor and another BR/BA in finished basement for guests.
We have 1 baby now and could maybe have one more baby, but would like to move before baby #2 is too big. I guess we could move downstairs, but guest space is essential with our family dynamic. At this moment we are leaning towards 3 kids.
How big is your house (# of rooms and square footage)? 3 bedroom 2 bath, 1200 sq ft about ground and about 1800 now with the finished basement.
How many kids do you have? 1
Will you need to move to be comfortable if you have more kids? Not having any more. We go back and forth if we will move when he is older. It is in a great location, we have done some upgrades and the price allows us to have our second home which is slightly bigger but we actually plan to add on to. The kitchen is tiny and I wonder when he is a teenager if having the rooms so close to together is going to work.
