She was attempting to climb out, even with the sleepsack. We switched right around her second birthday to a toddler bed. It worked out well. She is now in a big girl bed and DS has the crib in his room.
We needed the crib for baby #2 so we got him a single bed a couple months before ds2 was born. He loves it and we haven't had trouble with him getting out of it after bedtime.
About 2.75 dd had been napping in a twin for month and I decided it was time. We tried one night, she did fine and I took apart the crib that day. Interestingly, dd never tried to climb out until the day I put it away when I encouraged her to try, just because I wanted to see if she could. She did it easily.
We moved DS1 around 2 I think. He's a pretty solid kid and it was kind of a pain in the ass lifting him in and out. He's also still the kid that will not get out of bed in the morning until you come and get him, so I wasn't too worried about him wandering out or anything.
DS1 is still in his crib at 32 months (he'll be 3 in Feb). He doesn't try to climb out. We are living at my parents' house so they already had a crib, which we use for ds2. Once we move, we'll put DS1 in a bed and DS2 will take the crib. I'm already dreading it.

At around 2 1/2, DD #1 stopped sleeping at night. She'd run laps in the crib until she collapsed in a sweaty heap. We tried everything, then finally it occurred to us that maybe a bed might work. And it did...she slept like a champ from the first night.
With DD #2, she was about that same age when she tried climbing out. Crib was lowered as far as it would go and she's tall, so we decided it wasn't safe to keep her in there any longer.
We needed it for kid #2, so we moved her a few months before he arrived. She was 20-21 months and we put her in a twin bed with a rail and a board for a trundle rather than a traditional box spring to make it low enough that she could get in and out with a stool on her own.
She didn't get out until after she turned 3 and her cousin showed her that was an option. But even that only lasted a few weeks. She just sits up and calls for us if she needs something.
This kid was never happy in her crib, when she was trying to sleep. She could never get comfortable, she kicked her way restlessly around the crib every.single.night. We put her in the bed and she slept great from night one. I truly think the crib mattress was uncomfortable for her.
He started climbing out around 2 1/2. I watched him one time, he did a blind free fall to get down. After that he was in a low twin with a bed rail and a stool to get up and down.
Switched at age 3. DD LOVED her crib and never climbed out. Made the switch since it just felt like time and... cough, cough DD still used a pacifier. We used the switch as a "get rid of the binky" transition. Which ended up being super easy.. DH and I were shocked.

That is so scary, I had a friend who found her 19 month old at her bedside staring at her one night, she could believe he got out. The next night she turned the volume up on her monitor so she could wake up and watch him on the video to see how he did it. She said he climbed to the top and jumped without putting his arms out, landing face first on the floor. He got up like nothing happened and wandered into her room again...the crib was gone the next day.
DD really wanted a bed at age 2. She was saying it and getting harder and harder to convince to go into her crib at night. the clincher was when she slept in an IKEA kids' bed at my parents' place in Florida the summer she was 2. When we returned from that trip, she really didn't want to go back in the crib and we were all at IKEA within a couple of weeks. We told her she could pick any bed she wanted and she picked the same one that is at my parents' place.
It also made sense because she was out of diapers at that point. So I didn't have to worry about her being stuck in the crib when she had to run to the bathroom.
For my older child we switched because she was getting really heavy and hard to get in and out of the crib. (I think she was ~38 pounds or so). My son over 3 and we're still going strong with the crib. I think we may switch him at 4 unless he starts climbing out.
DD1- I was pregnant and we moved into a new house when she was 27 months old and we just didn't set up the crib in the new house
DD2- I was pregnant and we wanted to take the crib down for a couple months before setting it up again for DS. She was like 28 months.
DS- I was giving the crib to my niece. We kept the crib set up for a couple weeks after getting a twin bed for him and tried putting him back in and he immediately climbed out so it seems that the timing for fortuitous. He was about 28 months also.
Basically we got rid of the crib each time because another baby needed it.

It was vey scary and was just a foretaste of what was ahead for us. The kid has no fear. We had him in a low twin with a bed rail and stool (to climb in and out) right away.

A few things:
1. Baby 2 was coming 2. I couldn't lift DD1 into or out of the crib 3. DD1 was working on potty training
We converted her crib to a toddler bed, then a few days after we brought DD2 home we put the old guest bed (full size) in DD1's room and turned her toddler bed back into a crib.

He was about 26 months old. he was regularly pole vaulting his way out. I watched him do it once. he kinda ran the length of the bed and launched himself over. And that made me decide that a crib was probably no longer safe. We switched DD around 28 months old and wish we did it earlier.
A transition to a bed is a great thing for both of our kids. Both kids sleep better in beds over cribs plus you can go lay with them for a few minutes to help put them back to sleep during wake ups or if the little one is sick.

She was 2.75 yrs. and transitioning to preschool in a couple months. Our pedi advised us not to do it too close to when she started preschool. (Too many transitions at once, and all that.)
So... we bit the bullet and converted her crib to toddler bed 2 months before she started preschool. It was rough at first, but she's doing great now.
We're pro-child containment devices around here. DS is in a toddler bed at MIL's because he outgrew the PNP he slept in there. He's been getting up in the mornings much earlier and wandering down to her room. I'm letting her figure out the tips/tricks to keep his little booty in bed at 6am and then she can tell me
I'm not 100% cruel though-I did buy one of the OK to wake clocks for DS, we're making a big deal about how green means go and green means it's time to get out of bed. We'll see how this works out.
