I went through tryb outs and practices, but then stopped when I realized I could break something. Lol
Go and check it out. I met a lot of interesting and fun people. You may want to attempt skating first though so you dont feel completely out of sorts. Im a great skater and it was still hard to maintain the speed, endurance, and skating in close proximity to the others.
I was involved in derby for almost 9 years. It's a lot of work and can be time consuming. It depends on the league. When I first started derby it was pretty much a drinking league with a derby problem. LOL These days that league is nationally ranked, has brutal endurance only practices, and is quite athletic. I love it, but I just don't have the time or money for it.
Good luck! I was part of a league for a while and pretty much everyone shows up in the same boat - wants to learn, most with no skating experience. I was a great ice skater (with hockey skates) so I thought that would translate but it really didn't. I will say a willingness to expose yourself to physical contact is probably a must but it was weeks and weeks before they allowed us to really slam into each other. The reasons I didn't stick it out mostly was the time committment - two nights a week practice plus if your league is big into getting itself established in the community there's committee meetings and public appearances, etc. I could have made the time if I was really really into it but I wasn't fast and hated getting hit so I bowed out after a few months. I met some great girls though.
Is there a rec league where you live? If there is, that is a GREAT way to get started and try it out. Where I live, rec leaguers pay money and show up. Or don't show up, it mostly matters to you. But there are no league jobs, no attendance requirements, etc. I would say most of the girls start without knowing how to even skate, let alone derby, so don't let that hold you back.
I don't recommend it if you don't have decent insurance though, because honestly- you will get hurt. The question is not "if", it's "when" and "how bad". In spite of that, and in spite of currently being out due to injury (torn MCL, mild ACL sprain, crushed meniscus) I love this sport and my teammates so much that I can't wait to get back. My husband also started skating a little over a year ago, but DD says she doesn't want to derby, she "just wants to skate around and maybe dance a little", lol.

What league are you thinking about joining?
Small world moment... I think you used to skate with one of my teammates!
I don't even know where to post an intro here! I was on TK/TN/TB since 2003, mostly local boards. I was m_and_m.

It's been an up and down year for her, but overall she seems to be trucking along. She and I have VERY different lifestyles so we aren't close, and we've both missed a lot of practices recently due to injuries (mine derby, hers fluke accidents like a tree branch falling on her at a bar) so we haven't caught up in a bit.

I skate with two teams in Austin. B.at C.ity R.ebellion (my main #1 team, my first priority, my loves) and TXR.G's The Reckoning. It's part of the rec league, but there are tryouts every session (have to try out each time) and we bout other leagues. It's basically a scouting team for the premier league. I was going to try out for premier but I tore my knee 10 days before tryouts.
Oh! DH recently created a co-ed mash up team as well. We've only played one bout so far. Practices are rare because it's everybody's second or third team.
When I can, I'm also involved with training new skaters in DH's league.

Sorry to hear about your knee! Derby is bad for knees. I tore my meniscus.
Co-Ed derby is fun! One of the local refs hosts a monthly, co-ed scrimmage at a local park. He provides lights and generators. Skaters, refs, and NSOs from all over DE, PA, NJ, and MD. It's a lot of fun!
