I wouldn't buy too many, maybe a small pack and keep the receipt. The hospital will provide them when you are there and sent us home with a pack as well. Mine were both in NB diapers for maybe 2-3 weeks.

DD never fit in newborns so we started with 1s. Most babies do, so I would start with a pack or two of NB size and a pack or two of 1s but don't open until baby is home. The hospital provides diapers while you're there so you can see if they are using NB or 1s and go from there. Some people love or hate specific brands (we hated Huggies, for example) but any unopened packs can be returned or donated.
You won't know the answer to your questions until you have your baby. My baby was in NB for a long time. A friend's baby skipped it altogether. Start off with a pack and if you need more or different, send your H to the store.
We had a pack of NB and a pack of 1s. Never used the NB because C was a chunk. I think we gave them to some friends.
Honestly I wouldn't stock up too much until you know what size and brand works for you. If you run low the first few days, you can always send someone out for some. People are always asking if you need anything.
DS2 is almost 2 weeks old and we just switched to size 1. Newborn was giving him red rings around his legs and he did pee thru a bunch of newborn size. We just cinch them in a little more at the waist and haven't had any issues so far.
We were in Newborn for a while but then we skipped straight to 2. It's pretty kid specific but you're probably safe with a case. And get Pampers because everything else is awful IMO.
DD was in NB size for about 4 weeks. How long your baby will fit in NB size diapers (and clothes too) will depend on how much they weigh at birth, if they're long and skinny vs. shorter and chunky etc.

Like others have said, it's kind of baby specific, so buy a pack and keep the receipt. But my baby was in them for a good 5-6 weeks I think, and I wish after that first pack we would have just bought a bigger case cause we ended up spending so much on little packs, not knowing how fast she'd grow out of them.
Pick up a pack (one of the larger, plastic wrapped packages, not a box/case) of Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive in NB and another in size 1. Send your DH/mom/friend to get more (this is a great errand for visitors who ask if they can bring you something) once you know what size you need but a package will be good for several days after you get home so it's not like you'll need to stop on the way home from the hospital.
Buy them, but don't open them and tape the receipt to the box. Once you figure out what size your kid needs, go from there. Very kid dependent. DD is lanky and outgrows sizes due to length and not weight.

My baby is 2 weeks old and was born at 6lb 13oz and never wore NB diapers. The nurses just fold down the tops of the Size 1 swaddlers for the umbilical cord and they work. For reference size 1 Pampers are for 8 - 14 lbs supposedly.

We started in size 1s with DS1 because he was a monster. DS2 was big at birth too (9lbs 4oz) but his skinny butt is still in NB size at 2 weeks out. We didn't buy any and had to run out and get several boxes so far. I've tried him in 1s but they leak out the sides still.
It wasn't a hassle to go buy NB after birth though, and we got enough at the hospital to last a day or two.

I would buy at least one pack. DS wore them for 6 weeks, DD wore them for 2 weeks. And newborns go through a ton of diapers, so even if you get a jumbo pack and your baby only wears NB size for a week, you'll go through them. Size 1s would have been giant on DD right after she was born.

I never used them, I returned the pack and got size ones. The hospital used size ones and folded them down... he was almost 8 lbs and fit in them just fine.

Thanks ladies! I figured it would depend on the size of the baby, but all your responses help a ton! Looks like we'll get a pack and tape the receipt to it. I'm not sure how many the hospital will provide, but I'll try to snag as many as possible!
Diapers were one of the few things I didn't load up on or stress about in advance. We had one small pack of newborn diapers at home. The hospital sent us home with another 10-20. Their rule is to send you with whatever is left in the open pack in your room.
Over the past 19 months, we've gone through so many brands. His shape has changed, as have my preferences. I ordered a box of diapers off of Amazon within days of getting home from the hospital, and also had DH pick up a pack at the store.
We went though 2 boxes of 88 NB diapers plus some small packs taken from the hospital. About 2 weeks then we moved up to size 1 just because we didn't want to get more NB and the ones fit ok.

Both of my average sized newborns were in n size for not quite 2 weeks. And only that long because I was determined to use every diaper I bought. I'd say buy a small pack of 80 size n, and a large box of size 1. I like pampers for newborn size because they're a touch larger. After that I like huggies.

I was expecting an 8 pounder and ended up with a 6lb baby. I foolishly though I received too many NB as a gift ( 2 big boxes) and took them back for Size 1's. DS did not fit into sizes 1's until 2 months ( and I tried before then and just ended up with more laundry).
All that too say- just wait. Keep the receipt and send some out for some.
THe ones from the hospital lasted a few days anyway.
