I had to do that b/c of my 2 year old. My older kid was not an issue, but man he was a little shit last year. I expect this year to be no better. My dogs sometimes knocked ornaments off with their tails, but on accident.
I have two cats and they only play with the ornaments on the very bottom. They have never climbed the tree (unless they do it while I am at work!) I have a lot of breakable ornaments I just put them on the top third of the tree.
I've never had an issue with any of my cats but I've never had kittens. How old is Dexter and how playful is he? My cats were always a few years old or seniors when I adopted them.
ETA: wait I take that back a little. They do sometimes paw at the bottom ornaments but that's it. Never climb the tree.
Our cat is lazy and fat. We put crappy ones at the bottom since she will hit them with her paw but Dexter might be cool. Or not.
Cats are fickle creatures. Don't try to guess their next move. (Unless it is walking under your feet at the top of the stairs, falling to your death. They will for sure try to do that EVERY fucking time!)
If you can secure the tree so it doesn't fall over, I'd have plastic ones at the bottom and use the glass ones at the top. I say secure it b/c I had a cat once that climbed up into the tree. Not good.
There's really no telling whether he'll bother the ornaments or not. When I was growing up, we had two cats who used to take as many ornaments as they could carry off (we found them all when we moved, LOL) and we finally gave up and just decorated the top half of our trees. The cat I have now has zero interest in ornaments, but she's obsessed with the tree itself. She chews on it, lays under it, drinks the water, etc. but doesn't touch the ornaments.
Our cat Pablo is a maniac and he didn't bother the tree much. That said, we have these hooks in our ceiling that the old folks who lived in our house years ago must have used to hang house plants, so we tied the tree up to the ceiling. We also put the delicate ornaments up on top.
Yea, our cats are Christmas fun ruiners. We don't put ornaments on the bottom portion of the tree but they still manage to knock some off. A couple years ago they knocked the tree down completely.

Our most destructive cat's most egregious offense was chewing through one of the strings of lights (yes, the lights were ON at the time), but he was a notorious cord-chewer. The other one was offended by the tree skirt and destroyed three before I gave up. But I haven't had a pet-related broken ornament in 10+ years of pet ownership. R, on the other hand, has broken at least a dozen ornaments. Conclusion: Keep the cats and dog. Get rid of the spouse.
My cat doesn't bother the tree, either. She might sometimes bat at a low-hanging ornament, but mostly she just likes to lie underneath it… and maybe wrestle with the tree skirt.
We have two cats, and only one will bother the tree. He takes any ornament that looks like a person off the tree (I think that's his criteria, anyway- he leaves alone birds, balls, spirals, etc.).
I never had a cat that climbed the Christmas tree but I did have a cat who like tearing up mice into parts and "placing" them around the tree skirt like gifts for us. So it could go a whole other direction.
