Fun! H and I just took a sailing class this summer. I think that sounds like an awesome membership - especially since you can use their boats without any additional charges. We had to pay $250 each for the class we took and the class gave us the ASA101 certification, so we can take out boats up to 21' with the sailing club. We still have to pay an hourly rental charge to use the boats.
I had only sailed a few times with friends who all knew how to sail before taking the class. H loves sailing, so we thought this could be something we could do together. I'm definitely glad I took the course and feel much more comfortable on how to set up a boat, how to sail, how to bring it back in and get everything put away. If something every happened to H on the boat, I'm pretty sure I could get us back home safely I would definitely recommend doing it!

There's a similar sailing club nearby and DH and I want memberships for next summer if the whole make a kid thing falls through. I think it's super fun, but I've always had a 16' boat at the cottage, which rotted out two years ago. The club holds weekly mini races and it's a lot of fun and a good social group.
So much fun. I took sailing lessons as a kid, and lived around water most of my life. We are moving to southern California this weekend and I can't wait to join a sailing club and teach my kids to sail.

Wait, you can pay $250/year and have access to dozens of boats? That's ridiculously cheap. Are you able to get a boat whenever you want? I'd do it (if I liked sailing, which I dont lol).

Yeah - no way. She must have her numbers wrong.
We are part of a boat club and it's nowhere near this price.
@stpete did you mean $250 a month? They probably have a one time membership fee as well.

At our local club it is $300 per year. I think a family membership is $400. You are expected to volunteer two days with the club. One day is club maintenance (installing or removing the docks in the spring and fall) and the other day will be helping during a regatta. So there is a volunteer commitment to offset costs. You might want to check into that since that is how many of these clubs operate.
It's $250 a year. They have probably a dozen 18' boats and some other smaller 1-2 man boats. It's first come first serve, but I don't think there is a huge demand. It's affiliated with the local yacht club and I think most people have their own boats. I've looked into boat clubs for power boats and they are about $200/month. Classes are $75.
