I volunteered to bake some goodies for a bake sale this weekend. It's at a benefit for the family of my coworker, whose husband had a serious health issue this summer. I personally never really buy things at bake sales because I don't like eating things made by people I don't know (I don't know anything about their hygiene or the cleanliness of their kitchen!). What kinds of treats are hot sellers? Any ideas? I'd say my baking skill level is a medium. And to make this MM, I'd prefer things that contain inexpensive ingredients!
I do brownies a lot for the bakesale fundraisers on base. (from scratch, they really are better from scratch than from a box)
They're easy to make, one batch makes quite a few, so I'm not standing over the oven all day with pan after pan of cookies, and they seem to sell really, really well... No clue why, but they do. It's fairly normal for me to make 2-3 pans for a fundraiser, and because they're so easy to make, I don't mind doing this.
I can PM you the recipe I use, if you'd like.
Cupcakes can be difficult for our fundraisers because of limitations on who can handle food - I've taken the appropriate Army-approved food handlers course, so I can handle the brownies and put them in baggies so that whoever is running the table can sell them without having to handle the food (they just touch the baggie). Cupcakes don't package up very easily for this. Cookies are pretty easy to pack up, too, I'm just too lazy to make enough cookies to make it worth it...
Oh, and if it's a morning thing, something more savoury can be a big hit. I've made chedder-herb biscuits that went over well. Drop biscuits are pretty easy to make, especially if you have a pastry cutter (it makes one step of the process easier).
Just make sure to *barely* bring the karo syrup and sugar to a boil, then remove from heat. If you let it boil for too long, they'll be hard and crispy.
I find that baked goods that appeal to kids sell fast. I know that I would rather buy a little treat for the kids instead of buying something for myself since I am trying to lose weight. My kid would chose anything covered in sprinkles or with colorful candy/M & Ms.
