I hope this doesn't set off a new wave of panic, but I'm sure it probably will.
It already led my coworkers to have a conversation about how they should stop accepting all flights from "these countries" into the US and how we shouldn't let "these people" in.
At which point I walked away for a few minutes. Of course, when I came back they had moved on to how the flu shot can cause autism. So, yeah....

It already has. My stupid FB moms board for the area are about to climb into their bunkers and never come out again.
I'm going to Zimbabwe for work in a few months.
I told my mom today and she flipped. We had to have an extensive discussion about where, exactly, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea are located and how the virus spreads.

Where in Zim are you going? I loved my time there. Most of my friends in SA were Zimbabweans, they're the best.

They are now saying that the doctor should have his license revoked.

My local nj board thinks Ellis island should be used as a quarantine. and that the CDC is obviously lying about he risks. Nobody can answer my question about what the CDC would gain from downplaying the risks. Details, details.

I've had ongoing discussions with people about this and everyone keeps saying that they need to shut the borders (overreacting, IMO) and institute mandatory quarantines for people arriving in the US from affected areas.
My question is this: Can the US even do that? Institute mandatory quarantines?
FTR I do not think mandatory quarantines are needed. I'm not worried about Ebola, there are much bigger fish to fry when it comes to public safety.

Someone on my fb said the nurse who flew to Ohio should have treatment withheld. Yup.

Those people are nuts, too. Mandatory quarantines and "closing the border" would not only be crazy costly, they'd be next to impossible and would actually worsen the situation.
First, there are no direct flights to Liberia, Sierra Leone, or Guinea. People have to fly through a European or other African hub to get there.
Second, where the fuck would you put all of the people who traveled to these countries while they waited out the 21 days? And where is that money going to come from?
Third, if you did this, people would only lie about where they'd been, which would make it harder to determine who actually did have Ebola and who didn't.
Any time they say on the news that someone MIGHT have Ebola, if they don't meet two of the following three criteria (are from one of the three countries affected, are a medical professional / a family member who has been caring for patients / loved ones with Ebola, and / or have been in one of the three countries affected within the past 21 days), I know it's likely malaria, dengue, or typhoid instead.

So I do know that if someone refuses Tuberculosis treatment they can be put in jail and be forced to take meds or stay in isolation. I'm sure that's probably county and state dependent and not a federal thing. But you get my point, that yes, I think higher forces can legally put someone in isolation/quarantine or get treated.
My coworker was pissed last week that our boss kept plans to go to a conference in Austin, Texas since there were cases in Texas. I tried reiterating that Texas isn't exactly a small state (not is Ebola airborne) but nothing. I can understand concern and caution, but people are being over the top.
I would say don't go to TX but for other reasons not out of fear of Ebola, but Austin is cool

I'm not saying that they are right at all since as you mentioned, it's not airborne, and the chances are like 1 in over a million of getting it. But there were kids on the plane from OH from a school not far, even by normal standards, from Austin.
Signed, someone who went to Dallas while while the first guy was still alive, so clearly I'm not actually worried.
Oh, My H's hospital had an Ebola drill today. I asked him how it went, he says, 'oh, the patient died'. What the hell kind of drill was that? Apparently the 'patient' presented to clinic, had suspicious symptoms, was transferred to the ER via appropriate transport, where he died. HOW DOES THAT TEST THE HOSPITAL'S ABILITY TO TREAT EBOLA. I am just WTF at them.
ETA: ER, not ICU.
Oh dear Lord this is like the time I was a disaster victim for training purposes. I had a 6" metal spike coming out of my back. Only one of four teams found it. I told them my back hurt! Oh and the guy that found it a) kicked it when he climbed over me and b) said "OH SHIT" even though he had seen me walking around drinking coffee with a 6 " spike coming out of my back 30 minutes before. They tried to move me but time was called in the hallway, I died again. All these drills just teach me I'm on my own in a disaster.
I just hope the hospital in NYC doesn't pull a Dallas and protects it's staff.

me too. polio? no biggie, but ebola makes them panic. lol
Just curious. Why polio? There have been less than ten documented cases of polio in the USA in the last, what? 40 years? But we still make sure to vaccinate against it. If people chose not to vaccinate people would be slamming gifs and calling people names. People get fired up about Ebola (which I guess people in the USA are more likely to be diagnosed with then polio) and it's OMG, what idiots! I personally am as about as worried about getting polio as I am Ebola but I am only immunized against one. I REPEAT, I AM NOT PERSONALLY AFRAID OF EBOLA and I am pro-vaccine. I just think it's a little odd that a board that is so pro-vaccine is so quick to laugh at people who are worried about Ebola. Or ebubala, as my friend's mother calls it. Bless her heart.

Because there is a way to prevent polio that people are too stupid to take advantage of, and by doing that, greatly increase the risk of a polio resurgence. A disease which killed and permanently disabled more people than ebola has. You don't get to freak out about one disease and eschew the verified prevention of another in the same breath without getting a major side eye.
