With all the other kids around as well, I'd expect that their statements would indicate that he started it. If she gets in trouble they'll likely go easy on her because of that.

I have no issues with what she did. My parents would have probably made me sit through the detention my school would have handed me, then taken me out for Ice cream
My reaction is "Start Shit, Get Hit", but I'm not probably the best example setter.
Lol. I'm just bracing for the coming accusations of trashiness.
I think he was quite trashy. Good for Squirrelygirl for defending herself against an asshole bully. I'll be unsecretly proud of her so you can maintain the illusion.
It's not like he hit her and turned his back to leave. The video shows he was going to attack again. There is literally no way you can try to preach non-violence when it was self defense. For that, the school better not be punishing squirrely girl and should come down hard on the boy.
Way to go squirrely girl! If the boy was my son I'd march his butt over to your house, have him apologize to your DD, and then thank your DD for putting him in his place. What a little shit!
How old is your daughter? wtf is wrong with that kid that he slapped her in the face??
I vote good for her. I'd be proud as shit of my daughter if she stood up for herself like that. Of course we'd have a discussion about all the nonviolent ways of handling conflict, but there's only so much you can do when someone is literally hitting you in the face.

Unless there is a mutual combat clause in the school policy.
Not a teacher, but I hate mutual combat clauses too.
I've heard of too many kids who are being bullied suffering very harsh consequences for finally standing up to them, when they've been picked on one time too many and fight back.
As is the case in this situation, it's only so much "stop that" you can do, and IMO, if you are literally being hit on at that moment, the one defending themselves shouldn't get in trouble.
