I just emailed my philosophy professor what I thought was a very straight forward question about whether Philosophers of Language believe that zero has a value or is seen as a "nothing." Several thousand years ago, in the history of math, it was this big break through when people decided to agree that zero has a value and is not just a placeholder to signal "no number goes here."
It appears that many school administrators are ancient mathematicians who believe that a 0 is just a 50% placeholder, then.
