H and I are in the process of re-decorating our house one room at a time. Today we bought a new bedroom furniture set. The next step is to buy new bedding to go with the new furniture, but I just realized that I have no idea where to find quality bedding. The one comforter that I bought from BB&B fell apart almost immediately, so I know that we don't want to go there. I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money, but I want to buy something that looks nice and will last for a long time.

We got our set from West Elm. It wasn't a bargain, but it has held up impeccably. If I remember correctly, I had parents give us different pieces (cases/shams/etc.) that year to help with the cost.
I know lots of people have bedding from Pottery Barn, but I don't know how affordable it is or how well it holds up. Marshalls sometimes has high-end pieces (like Ralph Lauren) at a low price, so I would check there. Macy's has quality bedding but is probably expensive.
I have sheets from Target and Kohl's (the Sonoma brand) and I'm satisfied with them. My duvet cover is from Ikea and I'm happy with that too.

This is a really stupid question, but: What is a duvet cover? Is it the same thing as a comforter? Or is it just a slip and you have to buy the filling separately?
The duvet cover is just the slip thingy you put your duvet (or comforter) in. It's essentially like a giant pillowcase to put your comforter in and snap closed with buttons at the bottom. I have a plain white duvet, which is not cute, so I put it in a pretty duvet cover. I like that I can use a different cover depending on the season, and it's much easier to wash the cover than it is a big comforter.
There seem to be a lot more options for duvet covers vs regular comforters. I love using a down comforter and then changing up the duvet cover when I feel like it. I usually get mine from pottery barn.
A good site for bedding is kinglinen.com they have SO many options and are really affordable. We have had our big 7 piece set for almost 2 years now, so far so good. It was 59.99 for all 7 pieces!
We've had sheets from both BB&B (the beech ones, loved em but after a few years they got holes in them) and Target (only used the sheets for about a year and they ended up with holes). We just got some new ones from TJMaxx but if we could afford it, I'd totally get the beech ones again. I can't remember where my comforter is from but I want to say Ikea or Kohls. The duvet cover is from BB&B and I really like it!
We have a couple duvet covers from Ikea that have held up really well and you can't beat the price. They have quite a large selection if you have a store near you.
There is SO much stinking bedding to choose from! I have no idea where to start in deciding what colors would be best. For goodness sake, I am not very good at this decorating stuff. LOL.

Haha, it's true. It took us forever to register for bedding for our wedding because we couldn't decide! We basically went with a neutral sheet color (grey) and picked a couple duvets that we liked in colors that we could see doing our bedroom in. The one we got was mostly white with kind of a naturey design in grey, blue and green. The other we liked but didn't get was purple and grey on white I think. Interchangeable with the sheets, and we can't paint here anyways (if we did, it would probably be a neutral color). So in my mind, if you pick a "neutral" for sheets, then decide what other colors you would want in your bedroom, that should at least help narrow it down!
estrellita - I'm leaning toward red or purple. I'm leaning toward red because the things we've bought to hang above the bed are mostly neutral colors, but one has a little bit of red in it. H has already told me that he has no opinion so I can choose whatever I want.

katespade Red or purple is good! I love purple with grey because it's nice and calming (I've always been really interested in colors and the psychology behind them).
The other thing I try to narrow down is a general style. We prefer things a little more modern and/or naturey. There's a particular style that's hard to explain but I know it when I see it. It's kind of whimsical almost. If you can narrow a few styles you both like down, that helps a lot. Maybe floral, geometric, more masculine or feminine, patterned, solid, etc.
estrellita - We've talked about liking styles that are calming. The set that we have right now is very busy, and it just doesn't go with the feeling we're going for. Here's one of the sets I've found that I like:
I'm also considering going with a quilt instead of a comforter. Our bedroom is always the warmest room in the house, and I love the simplicity of the quilts.
travelbug - Thank you! I'm really excited for it to get here! Our bedroom is not very big, so I hope that it doesn't look smooshed once we get it all set up.
travelbug - We are putting off buying a house for another few years (probably at least 4-5), so we decided it's time to get comfortable in our current house so that we can be happy here until we're ready to buy. We've been here for a year and a half and we've spent that whole time treating it as a temporary place so we've never bothered to do any sort of decorating until now. Heck, we haven't even unpacked. I still have clothes in boxes instead of hanging up in the closet.
katespade that's a good idea, then it will feel more like home! We don't know where we will live in 1-2 years, so I think I'll hold off until then to not move as much furniture. If my H ends up getting a job when he graduates school, in our current town I will definitely purchase furniture to make it even more homey!
travelbug - Waiting until you're sure about where you're going to be living after the next year or so definitely makes sense. We were holding off because we didn't want to have to move furniture, too. We definitely want the house to feel more like home, and I also have nothing to do with my free time now that I'm done with school, so H found me a project. Haha.
