They are seriously holding a nurse that works with DWBs hostage. I thought they would closely follow them, even make them stay at their house. But no, she's apparently a criminal. We seriously need some federal oversight here. Fearbola is no good when the ones who are in charge catch it.
Is this without precedent? Idk how i feel about it, but I don't think it is some out-of-left-field scenario. I remember quarantine protocols during the h1n1 height, and that is such a comparatively mild disease.

Did you read article?
The conditions in which they are keeping this nurse are shameful, first of all.
And mandatory quarantines for everyone who has worked with an Ebola patient or traveled to Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea are costly, impractical, and absolutely unwarranted.
It does not make sense, the policy in NY/NJ to do this. It does not line up with the science that we know about this disease. I get the fear people have, but common sense and proper safeguards will stop/slow disease. It is a waste of manpower and poor utilization of supplies to quarantine her for 21 days.
To isolate an individual, take away their clothes/belongings, and make them poop in a porta potty when they don't have the disease is wrong. Unless you are in contact with the bodily fluids of an Ebola infected patient when they are symptomatic, you will not get it. I hope the public outcry will make them think twice, and allow the nurse to go home. Let her quarantine in her house, like the others, if need be.
They have her in tent outside of the hospital. Shameful indeed.
Seriously? Then they are just assholes. A freakin tent for 21 days? They are just asking for a big old lawsuit, especially if something happens to her.

That is what I read on CNN in the story and saw in the video. Now grant you it is not a "pup" tent, but it is a tent.
If these are the rules in place, people are going to lie about their travel history. I hope this doesn't deter good individuals from helping those in need overseas.

Yes it is without precedent knowing the science behind the virus. In addition, the way they have treated this lady is beyond ridiculous. It's clear that no one really knows exactly what they're doing and they are just reacting to the hysteria without thoughtful, necessary and humane plans in place.

This is ridiculous. This is uncalled for to put it mildly.
In an unheated tent, I mean, come on. What are they hoping to gain by this, other than looking stupid. Also, I really wanted to smack the smug look off of Christie's face, when he was all NJ/NY are going to quarantine, since CDC recommendations are always changing. It was so condescending.
Here's the thing, anyone who's worked in an outbreak or emergency setting should know, that you can be prepared as you want to be, but things change when real life happens and you have to be fluid.
Sure, CDC has made some missteps, but to think your policy is better, um no. It's going to blow up in his face, guaranteed.
CDC rules? FTR, CDC has no mandate over states. CDC makes recommendations and that is it. States choose whether to comply.
This is not the first time Christie's stupid has shown and it won't be the last.
I know what CDC can and can't do. Rules wasn't the right word, but yes, I think CDC knows more than Christie, and no one except him, for the most part, thinks his plan is a good idea.

I'm sorry, that wasn't meant as a dig at you, but at Christie. Most people don't know that CDC does not have a mandate and Christie is exploiting that.

No worries. I didn't mean to come off snarky in my response. Sorry.
I think any medical practitioner who has come in contact with the disease is now more than willing to self-quarantine to protect their family and friends.
Detaining someone without proof and while non-contagious is a massive human rights violation and will prevent medical practitioners from travelling to those areas where they need the most help. I'm horrified.

She's in a "climate controlled tent" in an unused area of the hospital annex, so not without heat. Still horrible conditions though.
Eta: at least I'm hoping that means she has heat, but it is an assumption.
I am so pissed off about this. It's like someone let the ignorant people on my Facebook feed run TWO states. Even madder at the governor of New York because I am sure he doesn't really think this is a good plan but is running for reelection and pandering to the lowest common denominator.
It's a huge 4th amendment violation and I hope Doctors Without a Borders, or if they won't, the ACLU, has spent the weekend working on a writ to get that poor woman released. FFS. Even IF the quarantine served a compelling state interest (which I don't think it does) keeping her in a tent is NOT narrowly tailored.
Ugh, this is still bothering me. Especially when she is talking about sitting in that room for hours and people like the immigrations officer barking questions at her like she did something wrong. She is a fucking hero, and this crappy treatment is pissing me off so bad.
I haven't heard any updates this morning. Any chance she isn't still cordoned off in some unused area of a hospital? Seriously, areas like that at night are so creepy.

But they're not quarantining themselves. I can't understand why they wouldn't quarantine themselves but they're not. I'm shocked that there is no quarantine period in place for people who are working directly with infected people.
And it was Cuomo who said they could not trust people to quarantine themselves. So save a crotch shot for him. He was hardly marched out there at gunpoint by Christie.
This is very upsetting. She is being treated like a fucking criminal! Worse than a criminal. If we can't get our shit together we are going to have a huge issue getting health care workers to do this kind of care.
I can't make any comments about mandatory quarantines bc i know less than nothing about this type of disease transmission but I can't understand why we can't allow people to quarantine at home or at worst freaking hook them up with some internet and Netflix. My God!

He most certainly was manipulated into it by Christie. Cuomo is up for reelection. When Christie instituted the quarantine in New Jersey it put him in an untenable political situation. I still would vote against Cuomo for going along with it, and he is just as responsible since he could have said no, but of course Christie is behind this. Cuomo went from rational to "save a seat for me at the tea party table" on this one in about four hours.

Oh please. It was announced at a joint press conference. If he doesn't have the stones to lead his own way he has no business being the governor of NY.

She flew into Newark and is being held in New Jersey. That is my beef with Christie over cuomo.

Mx posted an article on CE&P and I'm pretty sure she was only quarantined for a few hours, the day she immediately got back and then was released. This article's wording was different though, so now I'm confused. I assumed all along that she was already released. Not saying that a horrible quarantine for 12 hours is ok, but it didn't seem like she was still in quarantine...I'll see if I can find more info.
ETA: Here is the article I was talking about. I was confused because the beginning was phrased in past tense, so I thought she was released. But the bottom of the article said the nurse's mother talked to her on the phone Saturday morning and she doesn't know when she will be out of quarantine.
