DH and I are headed to Charleston this weekend. We'd like to go to a nice restaurant. I'd like seafood, steak, or Italian. Not too super fancy though. We went to Ruths Chris one time, and I'm still disgusted at myself for paying two weeks worth of groceries for one meal. Thank you for any suggestions.
I don't know theCOL where you live, but I had fabulous meals at the places frlcb mentions and did not spend two weeks' worth of grocery money on them. If you want to go really simple and cheap, Dixie Supply Company had great lunch. Try their tomato pie. The chicken and waffles there were excellent as well.

82 Queen: For your nice dinner. You will not regret the BBQ shrimp and grits. Yum.
Since you mentioned not wanting to spend a lot on food, I'm also throwing in my favorite casual places for some of your other meals.
Gaulart & Maliclet/Fast & French: Good for lunch, I've never tried dinner.
Sticky Fingers: Disclaimer - this is a chain and I only recommend it if you're not from an area that already has Sticky Fingers (parts of NC, SC, GA, FL). Is it the absolute best BBQ in the world? No. But it's really good, reasonably priced, conveniently located in the historic district, and can really hit the spot a casual meal. My favorites are the dry rub ribs and collard greens.
ETA: I noticed you are in Fayetteville after I posted. Forget everything I said about Sticky Fingers. You can get better BBQ at home.

I like Poogan's Porch, especially for brunch. Went to Lana recently as well and thought their food and cocktails were really good and reasonably priced. Virginia's on King is another good spot for southern cooking.
I just went to Charleston a week ago - I highly recommend Toast for brunch. I had the apple stuffed french toast with cider syrup and it was amazing; ate there twice in two days. Also recommend SNOB and loved Basil if you like Thai food.
