My Garmin 305 is on it's last leg, I'm starting to think about what I would like to replace it with- any suggestions?
A few things: -I would primarily use it for running distances up to marathons (MAYBE an ultra distance-did I just say that out loud?). -I want the stop/start feature when you aren't running (i.e. at a stop light) -I want a HRM -I would love something that could help me do tempo/speed work but not a must

I have the Garmin 220 and I think it fits most of your criteria.
I'm not sure about battery life, but I charge it like 20 mins after each run when I'm uploading data and never have had a problem. I've only run a half marathon though, and couldn't tell you what the battery was but seemed fine.
It has a button for stop/start and I use this at lights or to cross streets.
You can buy the HRM for it, it is currently on my Christmas list.
You can create workouts on Garmin and uploaded them, so after 0.5 miles it beeps or vibrates to tell you to change or after a certain amount of time. I've used this feature before and really like it, you can make them 100% whatever you want. It also has a "lap button" so you can set it to pretty much any interval to have it beep/vibrate at you and get your time for that lap.
Let me know if you have any other questions or if you want more details.
I love the 220! I have auto pause turned on, and it works well, but you can also manually pause if it somehow doesn't catch it. I have the HRM for that as well. Like Michelle said, you can create workouts on Garmin Connect and upload them.
I used to have the 10, and upgraded. There's now the 15, which is basically the 10 with HRM capability.
I like the 220 better for a few reasons. -lower profile bezel (the 10 looked huge on my wrist) -better battery life and charges very quickly (I ran a half after charging completely, and the battery indicator is barely worn down) -can hold more workouts in between uploading -finds satellites much faster -vibrate function at lap/mile rather than just beeping, which I often missed on the 10

Oh- I'd also like to be able to wear it as a "real" watch- have you done this?

You probably could. I know the screen locks after a while but if you hit the unlock twice it would show the time. I'm not sure if that was a feature you could turn on/off. It is a bit big for me but I'll get a picture of it and my other watch on my wrist later today and send to you so you can see comparison.

The 220 will show the time when it's locked. I wear it as a watch when we are hiking/camping/kayaking (anywhere I don't want to bring my phone). I have the purple one Mushe posted above. It is a little big/loud to wear on a daily basis, but I'm not judging if that's your thing. I think the battery can last for a week or two if it's locked.
I have a 210 (which I've pretty much given to Calvin) and a 910xt for tris. If I was picking one for just running I'd probably get a 220. I have the auto-stop feature on the 910xt and I really like it. I just wish the 910xt automatically powered off when it wasn't in use, sometimes I accidentally run the battery down (or it doesn't sit correctly in the cradle) and then it's dead when I want to use it.
Any thoughts on the 15 vs the 220? I like that the 15 I can wear all day (it appears). For those that have the 220- how often do you use the advanced workouts/pace alert features?

I have a 220 and used one of the heart rate based training plans on the garmin website for the half I ran recently, so I used the alerts and ran a programmed run most of the time. I really love it, and appreciate that I can input my own workouts if I ever know enough to choose a plan based on something other than convenience. Maybe I wouldn't like those features so much if I wasn't such a beginner who depends on heart-rate feedback to figure out my effort, though, so that may not apply to you

I will sheepishly admit that I've never once used the advanced workouts, but I basically bought this to grow with me as a runner. The training plans I've done to date are just 'run x miles,' and not tempo/speed/etc.
The big difference for me are the options for customization. You have the lock screen, and two other screens with 3 data points each. I keep my main data screen at overall time, overall distance, and current pace, and have the second screen showing average pace, current HR, and something else that I can't remember. I think whenever I get pregnant again, I'll change it up and at least have it vibrate when I go over a certain HR, just to keep me aware of not working too hard.
I really like that it vibrates at the mile/lap/whatever you want rather than just beeps (for the 10/15); I always seemed to miss the beep with my music on even pretty low, and then I'd waste my time and energy flicking through to see what my mile times were.

I use the pace alerts a lot during my long runs. I like being able to see that I'm either going to fast or slow to hit goal paces. I also prefer the vibrate for the laps as I never hear the beep and turned it off.
I used the advanced workouts previously to train for a 5k and 10k and loved that feature. If I didn't have my weekly track workouts with my running club I would probably utilize the workouts more. Well actually I'll be using it during the winter due to a schedule conflict to do the workouts that the coach is doing that day.
I think it depends on what you like to do and what you want to do.
For me, I'd rather have a bigger sized watch and do all the features than get the smaller watch and want those features down the road.
