I've been reading a lot about the Ikea bookcase hacks (the Billy, the Besta, etc.).
Do any of you have Ikea bookscases? Would you hack them into a built-in type project? Do you think they're sturdy enough or lasting enough? I'd love to make builts-in my formal living room but I would want it to really last.
I admit, I've never been to Ikea or owned Ikea furniture

We have the Billy bookshelves. We've probably had them for 10 years now. The only place they are showing wear is at the bottom, I expect from kid crashing stuff into them and maybe the vaccuum or something. If you made them look built-in with a baseboard that would probably not be an issue.

I'm trying to remember who the awesome poster on the old Nest H&G board was...she had her whole loft done as a built-in library with IKEA Billy bookshelves. I know I'd know her name if I heard it but I'm blanking.
ETA: It was myst33, but I can't figure out how to find her bio anymore, if it's even still up.
We kind of did this in our old apartment. But it was an apartment and we knew we'd take it apart eventually.
2 billy bookcases, 2 sets of lower doors, a billy DVD/media bookcase, a connection shelf, and a besta TV console.
We already had one of the bookcases and when we moved to this apartment, I decided that would be the best course of action.
The billy bookcases are a really good price but they are veneer over particle board. For something that's solid wood, the Hemnes book cases are really sturdy and nicer, IMO.

I have some Billy's in my craft room that I plan on making look more built in. They are pretty sturdy, and we're so easy to put together my4 yr old did most of the work-no joke. I plan on buying more and using them in the kids closets, too.
Not a hack, but my upstairs library is 13 tall units plus extenders. Because I carefully measured and used a range of widths, they do look sort of built in at first glance.
We're in the middle of a hack. We've used a combo of Besta & Billy bookcases to line our wall in the living room. Someday, we'll get back to filling in the gaps and base, etc with trim to look built-in.

I didn't know about the different materials (Billy vs. Hemnes). I really like the Hemnes cabinet with the glass doors. It's like the perfect dimensions for my space too (too short though, need extension).
Ooh - day trip to Ikea??? ETA: Ikea charges for shipping right? The nearest oen is like 20 miles...

I think it's like a $49 flat fee for anything you want delivered within a certain radius. The fee goes up as you go further out. They tell you on the phone.
