It'll be a great place to grow old? They'll have already installed the cameras and safety rails.
Truth. So I raised my hand when the officer got through telling us about the proposed cameras and license plate recordings to all around applause and asked "So who will have access to this data? Are there other cameras in other parts of the city? How are you dealing with requests for data? How are you protecting this data?" Answer: "Yes. Next question?" Seriously. That's the exact question/answer. I can't even believe that just happened. He wasn't even trying to be an asshole I don't think. It's like he couldn't comprehend what my concerns might be and thought he was answering my questions. I give up.
Ugh. I hear you. That is how this neighborhood is too.
Every. Single. Day there is someone complaining about safety on the Nextdoor listserv. It goes like this:
Warning: "Non-white person walking at Main & Second St. Looks suspicious. I called the police, but hide your children." (I am only exaggerating the wording. Someone has sent out an urgent alert for a non-white person walking through our neighborhood.)
Car "Break-in" alert!: "I'm so angry, I left my really expensive car unlocked for 4 days with my rolex sitting on the dash. Someone "broke in" and stole it! WAAAAAAAHHHHH" (It's not breaking in if you leave your car unlocked.)
Thieves stealing our trash!! "I left my broken water heater at the curb to go to the landfill, but some poor THIEF in a crappy truck came and "STOLE" it to recycle for $$! How dare these poor people steal my trash!" (there were so many of this posts including proud stories of people screaming and yelling at the poors to stop stealing their trash.)
ok. Rant over. I obviously don't like my neighborhood. Snobs.

OMG this is such a good laugh!!!!!!!! I might have to join next-door now just for some comedy.
Right after we had that huge flood this was all over our NextDoor. A bunch of people's furnaces, water heaters, washers, etc. were damaged and the "thief" comments were making me want to lose my damn mind.
Finally, a person who works for the trash/recycle companies posted on NextDoor that they actually appreciated the scrappers because A) the trash companies were completely overwhelmed, so they were happy that scrappers were helping reduce the amount of debris, and B) because the trash companies were in emergency mode and not sorting anything even recyclables were going to the landfill, so they were happy that scrappers were recycling the metal. I wish it would have been said at a real meeting so I could have given that person a round of applause!

this shouldn't surprise me but it makes me so so sad
Right now trash pick up is the hot topic. We have to secure our own trash pick up since the township doesn't do it so people are up arms about there being trash trucks the the neighborhood every day with some companies sending 3 or more trucks (waste, recycling, yard waste and sometime large item pick ups) through over the course of the day. So someone is contacting the 7 main trash haulers that pick up in the area to see what kind of discount we can get if more than X or Y houses sign up.

Wow, that would piss me off too. Most of our neighborhood streets are one lane. We have to take turns going up and down them if you meet someone head-on. Those trucks can block your street for several minutes. That just seems so wasteful too.
We have wide 2 lane streets so blocking isn't an issue. It was one old fart that got his knickers in a twist and got everyone all worked up about it.
The truck traffic is a tempest in a teapot, in my opinion, since we have all kinds of trucks (lawn care companies, UPS (usually 2 trucks a day), Fed Ex (at least one sometimes 2 a day), dry cleaning, etc.) in the neighborhood daily. 2-3 more trucks a day doesn't really make that much of a difference. Needless to say when I pointed out all the other regular truck traffic and that 2-3 more trucks a day didn't add much to that, my post was greeted with crickets.

My God, this is pretty bad. I thought it was bad here, but obviously we don't care anything about safety in my 'hood. Mostly we have neighborhood busybodies showing up at meetings complaining about how trashy the backyard is at (insert address) and say they have called city agencies numerous time to complain. Then I ask "what did the homeowner say when you talked to them?" and they look at me like I have 2 heads. Like 'WHAT- you mean I should TALK to one of my neighbors rather than anonymously call the police on them- that's RIDICULOUS!'

LOL, I guess I'm part of the problem. I'm pearl clutching at the horribleness for the environment at using THREE OR FOUR SEVEN!! TIMES the amount of fuel necessary to pick up garbage. Those are massive trucks and that's just so wasteful. I also hate the noise. I guess my industrial engineering (maximizing efficiencies) degree and bay area are showing
Oh, I get you. It would be better if it all got picked up on one day but the township will never take over trash removal and the different companies have their own schedules, so we are where we are. And since we don't have an HOA (thank the good lord for that), people get to pick who they want for their trash pick up.
There are many other things to get worked up about like people letting their cats roam outside killing all the birds and getting into horrible yowling fights at 2 am and the assholes who speed through the neighborhood - so to me trash pick up is waaaaay down the list.
