my last half was in February. It was the Disney princess race and basically a fun-run as we walked a decent chunk of it. in December, after running a shiyton last year my knee and inner calf started to hurt. The orthopedist said it was nothing serious and sent me to PT. i went for a few months then had a whole bunch of family stuff happen. I went for a few short runs here and there but nothing intense. it still hurt. I started back at PT three months ago.
This guy is much better and when he massages the inner part of my calf it hurts like holy hell. it is getting a bit better but my knee hurts. i try to keep exercise low but i am gaining weight and am just tired of all of this. running was a big stress reliever for me and well, i have a lot of stress now and am pissed that after weeks for $90 worth of appointments I am still sitting things out.
so i stopped today and will do 90% of what I was doing there on my own. I don't get him stretching out my leg or the ice and electric treatment but I think i can live without that for a while.
Is this normal? does this really take that long for things to get better? anything I have read says to rest for a few days and ease back into it....this has been MONTHS and I am tired of it.
I hear you! I've been in pt for over 6 months. It's a slow process. In my mind, it's better than surgery (if you can avoid surgery). I do go once a week. Here and there I miss an appointment, but it's best if you go consistently. Are you working with someone who works with athletes? That helps. Also, when was he last time you went to see your dr? I think keeping regular check ins with your dr. Is also very helpful in the process. I'm working with my neurologist and we are doing a anti-depressant for a pain killer and then in a few weeks I'm getting a steroid injection' but he still suggests continuing with ptm because I feel pretty good when I'm done seeing my pt.
Has your pt or dr. suggested any other types of activities while you heal? Have you had an MRI?

I hear you. I think you know I strained my hamstring back in Jan/Feb of this year. It's slowly getting better, but it's still not 100%. It still hurts sometimes. Maybe it would've healed faster if I did complete rest, but I would've lost my mind if I had to rest this long. Some of these injuries take a long time to heal, and it's frustrating.
Have you gone to a second/different doctor for a second opinion?
I agree it can take a while. I had a high hamstring pull in April 2013. Finally had to completely lay off all workouts including yoga in summer of 2013 for 7 weeks. Then with the help I my pt eased back in. By April 2014 I finally felt better a whole year after. Even now my hamstring tightens up faster and I have to back off a bit. Running injuries seem to take a while to heal. You'll get there just keep on working it out with the pt!
Maybe I'll try a different ortho. This guy is a triathlete and gets where I am coming from. My three appts with him took less than 10 minutes. It was does this hurt, does this hurt? Here go to PT. I am going to attempt a run this weekend to see how it goes.
i be typing from me phone. typos and grammer dont count.
I have a friend who is a runner and he started having knee pain so severe he couldn't run. Dr sent him to PT and nothing made it better. He found another guy who works on fixing gait for runners and after the 2nd visit he was running with no knee pain. Perhaps you can also look into something like that (in addition to your PT)?

Knee pain is SOOO frustrating!
I've been to PT twice for "knee "pain" which was actually weak glutes and tight IT bands & wiggly knee caps.
I used KT tape for about a year in every single run. I don't know all the science behind the tape, but it helped my knee cap track properly which helped my knee to not hurt.
In addition to taping, i foam rolled and stretched like it was my job. Eventually, everything started working properly & I don't have to tape anymore.
ETA: twice meaning, I went for a month, then quit. Then a year later I was having pain again, went back to the ortho, he rx'd PT again, so I went for another month or so.

Things can take that long, but it's also worth going back to the doctor or getting a second opinion. I quit PT earlier this year because it was making my injury worse. The doctor agreed and gave me a corticosteroid injection and told me to just do strengthening by myself after a period of rest. I did acupuncture as well, which was a HUGE help for me. PT in general or this specific treatment may not be quite what you need.
