I get this but I also get SO MUCH MORE upset that mental health us practically never addressed. A great number of these people have suffered mental health issues and have not been properly treated. Untreated mental illness + easy access to weapons = disaster. I just wish that was brought into the dialogue more, I suspect these people would use other weapons if guns weren't so readily available.
so mental health issues only occur in america? no. Mental health issues occur everywhere. I assume America has one of the highest use of mental health medication per capita (just a guess, could be wrong of course). Not saying that means we have mental health covered. Just saying, we probably address it as much as other countries no?
Guns are not in half of everyones houses in other countries though.
Oh I have no illusions that mental illness is only here. I am also not pro gun, I just think there is an issue with mental health treatment that is contributing to the problem. I can't speak to other countries' mh systems but just because we are equal to them, does that mean it is enough? The medication only works if people take it and that is difficult to monitor and a great number of the medications cause side effects that are nearly as bad as the original problem so monitoring and adjusting is really important. I don't know that answers, I just think this is part of the big picture.
The school shooting stuff causes me so much anxiety that I'm actually kind of worried about myself. Like I seriously feel that I might want to homeschool m bc of it but dh is adamantly opposed. He sees it as a sad and serious problem but not worth worrying about personally bc the odds if it happening to your kid are still slim. And I get that but fuck, when columbine happened it was in the news for months. I cried, everyone I knew cried. Now it's like barely even mentioned in the news. Like oh yeah another school shooting, some dead kids, did you see beyonce's hair last night?! I am just sick over it.

well yes. But I see it as a more seperate issue. Like, mental health issues are terrible. We don't want people going nuts and harming others. but if there isn't a gun or guns lying around in their reach because of lax gun controls then... that would be better...
This is an UO I think. The thread about leaving/not leaving kids in the car made me annoyed. It seems like American society gets up in arms about trivial shit and NOT NEARLY riled enough about all the guns and school shootings makes me glad I left the US. Give me a few spiders and snakes any day, over lunatics with guns all over the place. Fuck.
I don't think this is very UO. A classroom of kindergarteners was massacred and NOTHING CHANGED. It's shameful.
I like the meds I'm on, I no longer wake up each morning miserable. WINNING!!!!!!
Yay!
I was talking to my BFF last night and the med topic came up, she is taking the same thing. Makes sense since we are basically the same person. Anyhow, I just feel so much more content and stable now. I hope that anyone on the fence just goes ahead and talks to their dr. I feel absolutely the same, no side effects at all, but just more content, if that makes sense?
Ps: I hate that I always second guess effects versus affects. Sigh.
I'm also not "anti gun". I'm "anti gun for people who don't know how to take care of and store guns safely, are idiots, think they need to carry guns around in public just because etc"
I mean if you have a gun in your house for protection that is in a biometric safe and you legally own it and can operate it then I guess I can't fault that. Nor do I think people shouldn't be allowed to own guns for hunting purposes
I don't know what the "solution" is but I know America is doing it wrong

Where can I go with no snakes and spiders though?
I don't think it's fair to say nothing has changed. Gun laws here in MD have changed slightly. But the bigger change is how prepared schools are trying to be. I think there have been big changes there. And people are working really hard to protect our kids even though it's super scary. I give them credit.
And those same people scared the shit out of me with thier leaving kids in the car talk so, dang, they are serious!

I am REALLY glad I am lucky enough to live in a town & neighborhood where I don't feel it is necessary to have a gun in my home for protection though. But I realize not everyone is so lucky, to live somewhere very safe.

Damn Constitution. We've been doing it wrong since birth!
Seriously though, what would we do with all the guns that are already existing in homes? Banning all guns seems unenforceable, right?

I know lots of people in Baltimore City. None of them own guns. I know just as many people in my middle-of-nowhere town. They all own guns.

It's 11 am and my child has been crying about every single thing since he got up. We went to the park and he just stood there and had a meltdown over who knows what. We came home and more crying. I finally said screw it, gave him his paci and put him in front of the tv. A and I are in the kitchen coloring. 4.5 hours of crying is just too much. And now I'm worried he's getting sick, but I hope it's just an off day.

yes that is a problem
If only ireland wasn't so rainy and the economy so terrible! I could move back to the land of no (or very few) guns... Sure people get stabbed but not having guns readily available makes things so much safer in general.
Emerson had me ready to take her and go stay at my parents house last night. We pulled into the driveway at 6:30 and it was just getting dark. As soon as Emerson saw the house she started saying,"No, house. Ghosties, scared." Lol I freaked out until I got her to explain that she had seen the Princess Sophia with the ghosts at my parents house during the day.
heck of a lot harder to take out a dozen people in a few short minutes if you are weilding a knife or some other weapon. The "they'd just use other weapons!" argument is so bullshit to me.
Dunno man. Indiana Jones is pretty damn effective with that bullwhip. ;-)
We went to tour a daycare centre today and omg I want in. I was iffy about the 8:1 ratio, but seeing it in action it's no biggie at all. I really hope they have space for us asap.

Dude, sometimes being a parent is such an indignity. I'm trying to go the bathroom and one kid is literally climbing inside of the pants around my ankles and the other is trying to eat toilet paper and put his hand between my legs.
I stupidly through out a hyperbolic and not-flattering opinion on Waldorf schools last night, hanging out with some mom friends, and it turns out one of my friends sends her kid to a Waldorf preschool. I was so embarassed and totally ate my words.
Her school sounds pretty normal compared to some of the horror stories I've seen on GBCN though. I had to pretend that it was a "family friend" I'd heard them from and totally conceded that they were extreme examples. I do think it's really weird that they won't teach children letters or numbers though, even when asked by the child.
New Year's Resolution 2015: MYOB and keep my mouth shut on school and parenting philosophies.

JFC, just give me a MINUTE.
I hear ya. Nolan HAS to sit on the stool right in front of me and watch me. Sigh.

I feel like this often. Just give me a minute.
Then my H gets home and does similar things to me. Just give me a DAMN minute.

I think it is great how schools are trying to be more prepared but I don't consider it a national benefit that teachers are forced to mitigate problems created by most state legislatures. Seriously, that's not to undermine their work but I really don't think it should have to be their job in the first place and why I don't think that we as a country have moved very far. God bless them for doing it but I'm sorry for them that they have to.
Until you get at the real root of the problem - national access to guns - we won't see meaningful change.

I agree. I just wanted to make sure the hard working educators got their props for being proactive (as is RARELY seen in government).
