What!? No! I've never once cringed at your posts. I never would have known English wasn't your first language!
Thanks. I guess I just get intimidated by all the smart ladies here and so many teachers! I type and retype posts trying to use proper grammer and phrases and it drives me crazy sometimes so I just don't post. Or I use google a lot. Sometimes I worry people will think I'm dumb.
The picture quoting PSA was helpful for me as this is something that I had not considered. I'll try to be more cognizant of it in the future. Also, I'll delete my quotes of your card, Trudy, though I think it would be great if that cuteness lasted forever.
Oh, you don't have to! I don't really care about my photos, but I know other people do. My pics are all over the Internet lol.
What's your first language? I never would have known that English is a second language for you.
French X goes to full time French daycare so we try to speak English at home so that he can be bilingual. He has a little French accent when he speaks English, I love it. He also says things "backwards" because he translates directly from French when he speaks English. Things like "This is a car yellow" instead of "this is a yellow car" because in French we say "c'est une voiture (car) jeune (yellow)".
Oh right! I knew that.
Je pense que c'est magnifique! Je voudrais parle beacoup francais, mais j'ai oblie les mots.
None of these bother me much but when people cannot correctly use AFFECT/EFFECT I want to throw down.
Dictionary.com yo!
I think I was absent the day they taught this. I'm pretty awesome at all the other commonly misused (not misspelled) words but this one I cannot get right. I have lots of infographs hanging in my cube to help me and I work on it constantly. But my brain won't absorb it.
I used to think when in doubt, it's "effect". That is false. "Affect" seems to be appropriate in most situations.
WTH? You and I have been having a lot of the same responses/answers lately. It's like we're the same person! Hahaha but I can never get this one right either even though I always get the other words right and have no problem remembering them. Stupid. I try to avoid either word.

What? No don't do this! You don't nene to worry that much that you have to type and retype. even if English was your first language you should just be able to post what you're thinking/feeling at the time. It's way too hard to retype it all. Don't worry what we might think but really I don't think anyone would care. I know this whole post seems like people WOULD care but not enough that you should delete posts!
As to spelling, I've always been a terrible speller. Sorry! Once, when I was taking a final, I could not, for the life of me, remember how to spell vacuum. I ended up alternating between vacuum and vaccum throughout the test (the exam involved a discussion about cognition and whether certain things could exist in a vacuum).
FTR I have never once cringed while reading your posts! I know French is your first language but I'm never reminded of that by the grammar in your posts
I don't see it as much here, but you don't sale things. You sell them. Or put them for sale. But I will not sale them to you. Nor will I sell them to you if you talk like that.

I use "impact" a lot because it fits both scenarios!

I have a feeling that "impact" is going to be used more around here lol.

I've never seen this here ever, but did you guys know i.e. and e.g. mean different things? I learned that two years ago and haven't used either one since. I have an infograph for it though!

I have one about my husband and his family. Anyone from his home town really. They add an "s" to the end of store/restaurant names. It drives me bonkers. He will say "I'm going to SubwayS" "Need anything at TargetS?" "Gonna stop by WalmartS". JUST STOP!
Funny story. DH is much more French than I am. When we first started dating we were making dinner and he asked me if I could "rape the cheese". I burst out laughing. He had no idea why. In French shredding or grating cheese is called "râpé" so he thought it translated into English. Nope. Don't be saying that DH.
Eta: I realize this has nothing to do with this board. I just thought it was funny

OMG this one gets me every time!! Ack! I never know which one to use. I think @beener posted something to explain it and I still don't get it. I try to avoid using it altogether (<- is that right?).
Affect is the verb, effect is the noun. You're English is awesome though, so really don't worry!

This is the easiest way for me to process it, too. Personal effects... Noun!

I was going to PSA "on accident" vs "by accident" but apparently both are correct and are based on your age. Which apparently means I speak older than I am because "by accident" is predominately used by those over 35.

Honestly, this board writes pretty well. My students could stand to learn a thing or two.
OMG I cannot imagine what you deal with. Matt sent me screenshot of an introduction someone posted on a discussion board for one of his classes, and it was a travesty. There's no other way to describe it.
