Well I will always use "the"! I hate the 17, it goes through towns and you can get stuck behind slow trucks. I will always take the 87 to the 90 to get to Buffalo.
Yeeeeeah. That's not how we say it on the east coast, lol. It sounds so weird to my ears to say "the 17." (Are you talking about Route 17 in NJ?)
does anyone else have people on their facebook who write posts in really terrible english where you are like WTF even though english IS their first language and you know for a fact that when speaking to them in person they talk normally??
Is this an irish thing? several people I know from home post on face book and I often don't know what they are saying. I don't understand why you'd purposefully make yourself look dumb. It must be on purpose? I mean I KNOW people aren't sending work emails in this sort of cringeworthy "slang" talk. they couldn't be!
Yes. I think it has to be an Irish thing. It has to be intentional, and it drives me insane.

Yes, but it goes all the way across NYS so more that stretch.
This kind of thing makes me uncomfortable posting here. My English isn't the best because it's not my first language. I try my best. I type and retype posts so many times because I'm worried someone will "cringe" at my choice of words or grammer. Sorry folks, I'm not perfect.
I, for one, have never notice anything out of the ordinary about your posts! I never would have guessed that English is not your first language.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that this "bothers" me, but I do notice when people use "anxious" when they mean "eager". Anxious is something you are experiencing anxiety about, while eager is something you are looking forward to.
"Joe was anxious about his English exam, but was eager to finish school for the year."
skiesthelimit I always forget that English isn't your first language as I think you express yourself really well. Also, with the amount of sleep you've been getting for the last few months, I am surprised you can make sense at all!
All of this. I am an English teacher so I am probably more critical than most but I always forget you are an ESL mama. Your mastery of the complex English language is seriously impressive!

I never knew that calling highways one way or another was a thing - here we refer to freeways as highways and when we do, we say "the #", but some streets are named "highway 7" which is exactly what we call them. So if I wanted to give someone directions to the airport and I wanted to direct them on Highway 7 (street) to Highway 401 (freeway) to highway 427 (freeway) I would say,
"Take highway 7 to the 4-oh-1 and then head south on the 4-27"
