Now that I have a boy, I'm sorting and purging all if C's baby clothes. I have a giant bag of stuff from the first wave. Where do I donate it? Salvation Army? Goodwill? Vietnam Vets? I'm looking for somewhere that will have the most social benefit with the fewest negative political ramifications.
Our women's shelters actually get so many donations for clothing that they oftentimes won't accept clothing for a period of time. We usually donate to Big Brothers/Big Sisters which they then put in their retail stores.
I do not donate to the Salvation Army because of their anti-gay discrimination.
While I hate this about them too, it is the only place around here that guarentees the stuff stays local. Lots of those trucks pick up your stuff and then sell it to companies that ship it out, often overseas (and yes, I ask when the call to ask me if I have stuff for them to pickup). They benefit b'c they get $$ from selling it to the companies that then make a profit selling it overseas. I only give away stuff that is very usable and in great condition. I would rather see it make a difference in my community directly. So I've chosen to take it right to the SA resale store in my area and cover my ears about their discrimination.
There's a big box looking shed thing on the parking lot of my daycare that I throw clothes in. I honestly have no idea where they go though. I'm just lazy.

Huh. Well, I'd rather see my donations sold by people who don't proseltyze against homosexuals to a cotton recycler. So that what I'm donating is, ultimately, not funding discrimination. Whether or not local.

Fair enough and I can't even argue that point. Prob is they all pretty much suck. Goodwill has been well documented as having unfair labor practices, with some reports saying they can pay certain workers (in the US) as little as 22 cents an hour. (https://nonprofitquarterly.org/policysocial-context/23282-does-goodwill-discriminate-against-the-people-it-serves.html). So you may want to add them to your list too.
Also, if you're wanting the money to stay local, a lot of our private schools hold rummage sales to raise funds for their schools and accept donations during the school year. Those donations are the inventory for basically a HUGE 'garage sale.' I know one school who rakes in over $100k for their sale.

If there is a military base close by, you could check to see if they have an Airman's Attic. They usually give stuff to the lower ranking members for free.
