I know, maybe I'm a little behind on this trend. But I want to save some money and refinish a bedroom set rather than buy new.
I like the slightly distressed look that you can get nicely With chalk paint. I have also read you can just slap it on without sanding and priming first. Is this true?
What's the real difference between chalk paint and regular paint? Thanks so much!
Yes, with chalk paint you just paint and go. You still want to wipe down the furniture before you paint. Chalk paint is more expensive than regular paint and I *personally* prefer the finished look using latex instead of chalk paint, but I'm not into distressing very much. I'd recommend doing a practice piece before you start on your bedroom furniture - I like to experiment with old cabinet doors that you can get at Habitat for Humanity Restore for $5.
Also - I don't use the wax for chalk paint. I use Min Wax polycrylic.

My GF just finished a piece using it. She was excited to show me bc she knows I am lazy and that the chalk paint requires no sanding or crazy prep. Yay!
Chalk paint is super easy and requires no prep. I have painted two chairs, a cabinet, a coffee, table, and an end table with it. You can make your own much cheaper by adding one part calcium carbonate to two parts regular paint and, IMO, it is pretty comparable to the Annie Sloan stuff.

Yes, no prep work for chalk paint. I find that I usually need two coats though. I do not usually distress but I typically lightly brush with dark wax for an aged look and then I use the clear wax. I use the Annie Sloan stuff.
My MIL did a piece with chalk paint and it started peeling off right away. I thought maybe it was a sanding/priming issue, but I guess not if there's no need for prep? Maybe it was a latex-on-oil issue? Any other ideas?
Was it already chalk painted? It could be that the item was waxed - it's hard to paint over something that has been heavily waxed.
