Justice Department investigators have all but concluded they do not have a strong enough case to bring civil rights charges against Darren Wilson, the white police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Mo., according to law enforcement officials. When racial tension boiled over in Ferguson after the Aug. 9 shooting, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. traveled to the St. Louis suburb to meet with city leaders and protest organizers in an effort to bring calm. He assured them that the federal government would open a civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, but that investigation now seems unlikely to result in any charges.
“The evidence at this point does not support civil rights charges against Officer Wilson,” said one person briefed on the investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

Shit! I do not understand how there are no consequences here. With all the attention and the frigging govt getting involved, how does this continue to happen?
This is not the final say in regard to consequences to Wilson. DOJ civil rights violations are almost impossible to prove. We are still waiting on the local GJ to make a decision on the Indictment. That probably won't be out for two weeks.
I am having trouble why there is even the option to bring civil rights violations when it is virtually impossible to being charges. Window dressing.
Yes to this.
The DOJ doesn't have enough to even bring charges? It seems like the stats for the Ferguson police and working under that biased force would be enough to at least bring charges?!

I was wondering the same thing. Has it ever been successfully used to prosecute someone?
Yes. I'm not sure if it's been used lately but it was the charge that was used by the feds to prosecute a variety of crimes during and after the civil rights era when local and state authorities had either failed to bring charges of their own or came down with acquittals or mistrials on various murder trials.
Btw, did you see in that article that when they were looking for Goodman, Schwerner, and Chaney, they found the bodies of EIGHT black men who had gone missing?
And look at this here, they found those bodies, shrugged and said, nope, not the ones we're looking for and let that shit rest.
Two of the bodies belonged to two black teenaged hitchhikers that the KKK kidnapped, terrorized, and drowned and no one gave a shit about it until AFTER someone did a documentary on it.

NO! I didn't know this and I was just at the Newseum reading about that case (which I already knew about but it's still one that makes me shiver) a month ago.

There is a separate investigation into the police department. The rumors of Jackson resigning came from a fed leak. The train of thought is that Jackson recieved his pink slip from the feds via the media. While he is still chief, I don't think that will be for long.
Changes will be made, but I don't think charges can or will be brought against the police department. I think the DOJ is there to make suggestions.
I think Wilson will walk. I think there will be riots. I think the racists will have more ammo for why they are racist. I think the black community will have more ammo for being angry. I think nothing of any significance will change. It makes me sad, angry, and fearful for the future of my city.
