First Halloween here so I didn't know what to expect. I offered the bowl to let kids pick. Some grabbed a handful. Some asked how many they could take, and I would say two. Some went for one and I offered a second. We got close to running out but have a small handful left.
Our two year old neighbor stared at the candy for a long time, and got distracted by his light up wand. Then carefully took a piece. I asked if he wanted to take one more for mommy and daddy. He grabbed a bag of m&ms, walked over and handed it to dad before coming back to show me his wand again. My uterus and I both wanted to hug him.

We do full size bars, so I usually let them grab 1-2. As the night goes on and I get fewer TOTers, I start telling them to grab as much as they want, lol.

I told them each to pick one. We went with full size candy bars this year. Some of the little ones needed help. We also had mini liquor bottles for the parents

I've always handed it out, because that's fun. But if I have options I'll ask what they prefer. This year we just put a bowl full on the porch, under the light. I was going to stay in and hand it out, but I decided to tag along during Freddie's walkabout. Then we got home and it was time for him to get to bed, it just seemed less disruptive to leave out unattended.

I let them pick, and everyone just picked one until the last ones - older brother automatically went for two, little one asked if he could take two and I said sure, then older one went for a third and I felt the need to shut it down and tell him only two. I may as well have given them the rest of the bowl, we haven't had anyone else in the last half hour. If anyone else shows up, they're getting a giant handful.

OMG This is so awesome. Apparently one of the houses in our neighborhood was giving out beers to parents, but we missed that house.
