If you don't want ToTers to ring your door bell, you turn off your porch light. Conversely, if you want ToTers you turn the light on.
My DH (d does not necessarily mean 'dear' here...) in all his 43 yrs on the planet NEVER figured that one out. He was out with our DD for 20 min and only got candy from 5 houses but hit 'a lot more than that' and complained that they never answered their doors... :^) *-)
I'm not gonna complain that the 3.5 yr old doesn't have an ass load of candy - she got some at pre school and some at the Church's Trunk or Treat so it's not like she doesn't have any - but she was SO excited to wear her costume and she got to wear it for 20 min...

I thought so, but I have all my outside lights turned off, my main floor inside lights off, and all the curtains drawn, and I've still had three groups ring my doorbell already.
Didn't seem to be common knowledge last night when we were out. Unless most of the complex was very confused about the date (and it's never on a Friday night), there were tons of people who had their lights on--and even had their front areas decorated for Halloween--who didn't answer the door. Several of them were clearly home (TVs on), but had most of their lights off or blackout curtains drawn with lights on.
Of course, that's why I didn't feel badly at all when Abby knocked on a door that had a full Frankenstein door cover and light on and the dogs inside just went nuts.
I thought it was but kids in my neighborhood did not know this. I had my light off because I thought it was tonight and I didn't have candy ready yesterday. My bell rang all night.

I think it is common knowledge but every year when I run out of candy I turn out all of the lights at the front of my house and people STILL ring the doorbell. I stop answering though.
I don't leave my porch light on because I have it all decorated up with orange lights and stuff, and I don't want to ruin the ambiance. All the lights in the house will be on so it's clear someone is home.

see, i could understand kids not knowing. and i could understand if ToTing was on a different day or in the middle of the day (our old neighborhood always did it the Sunday before 10/31 from 2 - 4). but this is a traditional town with traditional hours etc...and he's *43*...
Yes. Our front light is motion light so we had the door open so they could see in the storm door that we were home. Plus jack o lanterns and halloween lights on the bushes.

Maybe they didn't answer the door bc it wasn't, you know, halloween. My house is decorated too and if someone came by TOTing yesterday, I wouldn't have answered either.
Except you'd have to live under a rock to not realize that trick or treat is rarely on a Friday night here. Every town advertises their TOT times and days in the paper, on the news and on the radio. What's the point of planning to give out candy if you're not going to do it when the kids will be out?
I thought it was common knowledge but H didn't seem to get it. I didn't realize he had left the porch light on until some trick-or-treaters knocked on the door. Luckily I had set aside a handful of candy I was going to eat myself so I had something to give them.

i've never heard of TOTing happening on any other day BUT halloween.
don't mind me!
It was kind of weird to me when we first moved here. I can understand moving it so it's on a weekend, but to make it on a weekday on purpose?
Maybe it's mostly an Ohio thing, because of the 75 or so communities and towns in central Ohio, only 12 had TOT tonight.
Yes, I just looked and counted. I'm supposed to be revising an article, but instead I'm counting who had TOT when.
A couple years back we kept our light on. Some teenage boys came by at 915 and my husband freaked out about being late. He threw the bucket of candy on the ground once they left out of frustration. It was pretty funny. Yeah but then I yelled at him for yelling at them because its common knowledge that's lights on = come :-).
